he and me

This is everyday supper at our house. Just the Gardener and me. The cheap old oilcloth comes out every winter before Christmas and I keep it on the kitchen table as long as dark comes early. I absolutely love it and what it does for our yellow and blue kitchen. It speaks of coziness which is high on my list. It's gone now, as spring has come.
These blue and white dishes are so cheap they don't have a name on them. But I love them and they don't break or chip--at least yet. And they suit me just fine. The denim napkins should also tell you something about us. The pewter napkin rings were wedding gifts 38 years ago.
The cutlery is Oneida and also never "breaks" or wears out.  I got it from the Betty Crocker catalog, setting by setting, after I got engaged, with those little coupons off the Betty Crocker mixes that everyone I knew saved for me. Oh yes, and little pink salt and pepper shakers were my grandmother's--depression glass.
This sugar bowl is one of my favorite thrift shop purchases ... fell and broke to several pieces and was glued back together. I couldn't part with it.

Connecting to Between Naps on the Porch today with other tablescapes, probably more elegant than mine!

  3. Thanks for being my first post! I love blue and white! Our first dishes were white with a blue band but I sold them at a yard sale about three years ago. I'm kicking myself for that now!

  7. What this tells me about you is that you love pretty things that are solid and practical, things of quality that last. And I love the pattern of the tablecloth and the fact that you have pieces about which you are so sentimental. I love the patterns of the china and the quiet calmness of this look. I'm a blue girl (who also loves pink), but blue is my first love.

Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed coming to your house to dinner. Hope you invite me back! :-)

    Happy Tablescape Thursday...

    XO,

    Sheila

  8. The glasses! Are they by chance from Smith and Hawken? I have champagne glasses in the same style that I purchased at Smith and Hawken a few years ago. I love the arts and crafts style (which matches my old arts and crafts house) and wish that I had purchased more. Alas, S&H is no more!

    Best,
    Bonnie

  11. I remember my mom having oil cloth tablecloths too. I think they really lay on the table much nicer than the plastic flannel lined ones.
Your winter table looks so cozy and inviting, I will be right over for a bowl of hot soup. lol
Very nice, and love the denim napkins!! how neat is that!
Casual, works for me. That is our day to day table. I do love to really gussy up for a family dinner now that the kids are grown and gone, so it is nice to do something special when they do come over for dinner or naturally for holidays.
Have a great day, and thanks for sharing your wonderful tablescape
    with us.
    Blessings, Nellie

I remember oilcloth -- I have heard it is making a comeback! It's certainly practical.

I too have a hard time giving up on things - and people. I understand completely about your gluing the sugar bowl back together.

  23. I love your snowflake tablecloth! Have to keep my eyes out for something fun like that. Of course, it might have come from that BIG
grocery, everything store that is up the street from you! I don't venture in there much unless I have to!
Maybe it was a Goodwill find?

Gorgeous tableware. WE always think of you with blue and white. ( Emma and me)

  24. My grandmother always had an oilcloth on her kitchen table ... your post really "takes me back!"
I loved the story of how you collected your cutlery setting by setting clipping the Betty Crocker coupons. I think it makes it very special. Great table ... cozy and appealing. Nicely done!
