'fore and afts'

When we first moved into this house I (eventually) painted every room. Among the first was the
living room--painted a sort of pinky beige that was quite popular back then. The tiny foyer was
a darker shade and a few months ago I painted it the wrong blue. After we made the old living room
into the dining room I knew things had to be changed. The wall paper in the
old dining room/now cozy sitting room was so dated--probably 25 years old--but we
actually loved it and had a hard time deciding to change it.
A straight-talking friend of mine finally told me I should let it go. That's all I needed!
Why does it take so long to make a decision that once done you wonder why it took so long?
I am thrilled with the color as I always wanted this color of blue, even though it's really gray.
I went to an older man at a local paint store, armed with pictures on my tablet,
and in just a few minutes he had he selected the colors for me. And did he get it right!
I let someone else strip the wall paper and do the painting. What a luxury for me!
The color in the entry and the (new) dining room are the same and also a form of gray.
We got some "new" chairs on Craig's List, a new chandy and some new window
treatments and it gave me the transformation we were looking for.
I think my most favorite spot is the old blue plates hanging
over my great-grandmother's cabinet.

  1. How lovely your new colors look! It does take courage to change. I need that courage to do the same in a couple rooms in our home. Your delft plates look wonderful above your cabinet! ♥

  3. I love your grandmother's cabinet and the blue plates.

I have several blue plates from my grandmother. They will probably be recycled down from the attic and onto display in the next couple of weeks.

I know completely what you mean about "what took me so long?" I made a couple of changes like that this year. We just get so comfortable in our homes, don't we!

  4. So pretty! Our dining room is "blue", too- the color is actually called shark's grey or something like that.

  5. I like your changes Dotsie. Don't you find just changing the colour on the wall and a few other things can you give you a real lift?
It's funny when you describe choosing the wrong colour; I did that very thing with the wrong shade of green for our home when we moved in. It bothered me for years and then I went to the paint store and said I wanted a butter yellow for the LR & DR and couldn't be happier since hubby changed it over.

  6. I love the changes and the paint colours. It looks so pretty and fresh and up to date. The blue and white plates over the table are beautiful. It's hard to let go. I'd like to let go of my dining set that we bought from my hubby's aunt and our bedroom set that we bought new 33 years ago. "Someone" won't change. :( But we did get the fresh painting done 2 years ago! :) I like that you reversed your living and dining rooms and it works for you.

  11. The grey is lovely and cooling but I do like that pink wallpaper and if you wait long enough it's all fashionable again.

  12. It all looks wonderful! I am surprised how calming the colors blue and gray are. And I perfectly understand getting the wrong color blue. I have the wrong color blue everywhere. Someday, I hope to switch it around.

  13. As someone who gets the color wrong nine times out of ten, I am impressed that the older man was able to get the right color using pictures on your tablet! I think I'll try that next time!

Your new color looks fabulous! Isn't it amazing how a fresh coat of paint can put things in a whole new light?
