cleaning the slate

And so the time comes to remove some of the clutter of Christmas
and create a clean slate. Little by little I've put Christmas away.
Well I should say, its all upstairs in the guest room. This year I'm determined to
reorganize how I store everything while I pare it all down a bit. It's hard to say
goodbye to some memorable ornaments, though, such as the ones I sewed or crocheted
the years we lived in the "big house." Maybe I should hold on to them a bit longer …
But the key is finding where I stashed all the usual things I have around the house.
It's amazing how when I find a place to tuck something away,
now a month ago, I assume I will find it again.
As the Gardener assures me, "It will show up in due time."
Just a little opportunity to practice  p a t  i e n c e  in this new year!

  1. When you succeed in your Christmas reorganization/paring down, I hope you'll do a tutorial. I'll wait!!

    Happy new year!

  2. Never mention the "P" word! LOL I am stashing things all over the place. It is scaring me!

I just figured out that next Tuesday is the day to pack it up. I culled out a few years ago and should do it again, but, in the interest of tidiness, I won't.

Have fun! What a cozy corner you have shared today. Got any coffee?

    Have a Happy New Year!

  3. I'm doing a bit of the same thing today. I start with putting the Santa things away then I get carried away with everything. The tree will stay another few days though. I'm not ready to let go of the lights yet. It's difficult to get rid of sentimental ornaments isn't it. I should be sending a few off as well.

  4. Everything looks cozy even without the "usual things." I put our "usual things in the Christmas totes for storage while we're all decorated.

Happy New Year - may the year ahead shower you with many blessings.

  5. LOL... I understand the, "where are my usual things", question.
I'm looking for a few myself!

  6. When I see your home (which was your mom's, if I remember right), I think about my own mother's house and wonder if we'll someday live there.

Btw, you are such a superb decorator. I always love seeing in your home. :)

  7. Is sad we spend a lifetime collecting things and our children just consider it as old stuff, well in most cases.

  8. I was straightening some storage items yesterday and found some of my regular items on the Christmas shelves. It comes from sending kids down to the storage for me!

I've been putting some things away too, and am going to take our live, shedding tree down tomorrow. The garlands and greenery around the house will stay around for a while. Love the lights in the winter!

  9. I'm dreading taking it all down and packing my precious Christmas things away for another year....
Christmas is the most important celebration for me - I love it.
None the less on 6th January, I will!

Now where did I pack away all the family photos and bits and bobs that are usually about the house!!!
I'm just like you - I'll have to rummage through the boxes in the attic...
Leann from "The Old Parsonage" has the right idea - now why didn't I think of that?!

  10. I'll be starting the packing of Christmas things tomorrow but all the winter snowmen and flakes get to stay until March.
Like you, and a few other comments from the ladies, I have to hunt for the everyday things I put away back in November. Sometimes an item doesn't turn up until the following Christmas as it gets buried in all the tissue wrapped seasonal things.
Your kitchen table does look welcoming, but unlike Vee, I'd be asking for tea. :-)

  11. Your home looks so cozy. I can identify with finding a storage place for something and then for love nor money can't remember where I put it. We are supposed to get snow tonight....2 to 4 inches. I'm waiting to see it.

  12. Christmas things are put away and I have a bag to take to the thrift store containing ornaments I no longer use. Nothing sentimental.
The house is looking bare as I didn't have the energy today to search out where I put the things I tucked away. Tomorrow will do for that.
Cozy is a good word to describe your photo.

  13. Love the cosy room scene. Doesn't that make you mad when you put stuff away but then can't remember where. That happens when I come home from being away on holidays.

  14. I know just what you mean about the missing "put up" items. LOL! Fortunately The Gardener is right... they do usually show up, long after I've ran out of patience however. ;)

Dotsie, I love that photo of your kitchen table... I'd love to be sitting there for a good visit. On with the cleaning of the slates... blessings ~ tanna

  15. :) I posted yesterday on fb that no matter how hard I try to reduce my Christmas decorations, there are still too many containers to store. I tried but it all means so much to me. I do really enjoy the "clean Slate" of January and liked your thoughts in this post.

Sending very Happy New Year wishes to you!

  16. Podso,
I did what you are doing last year. . .and I've not regretted it one bit!
Not only did I sort through my Christmas decorations by hue, edit, edit, edit was the priority. When I decided what wasn't going to stay, I called my son and daughter~in~law and had them go through the items. What they didn't take made its way to our local Thrift Shop which aids our Missions for our Church. Then, using my Library skills, I card cataloged each item in the container.
This year, decorating was a simplistic, renewing experience! A win~win decision. All it took was time sorting, organizing, carding in the cold of Winter when time was ample.
    Fondly,
    Pat
