a teeny tiny nursery

Back in our young days we didn't have much money, nor did we wait to marry until we were "established" in life as seems more common in today's world. My younger sister had the first grand baby in our family and in their tiny house there was no room to set aside for a nursery.

So I decided to make her one. Just for fun. How I enjoyed making it--carpet, wall paper, window with window shade, curtains, a rocker with a tiny crocheted blanket, a dresser with a tiny lamp, a cradle, picture on the wall and more … (sorry about poor photo quality).

I have alway been in love with miniatures . . . from the doll house we enjoyed playing with as children, to visiting the Queen Mary's amazing dollhouse at Windsor Castle or Colleen Moore's fairy castle at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry (which just so happens to be undergoing a big restoration project right now that is open for the public to see.) The photos at this link are so familiar to me. We would go to the museum with our school class each year and I would linger in my fascination long after the others had gone to a new exhibit. So I was delighted to read Cathy's extensive doll house post on her blog, Morning Musings. It inspired me to dig up this old photo of the teeny nursery. I didn't crop it more because I just loved seeing that old blue VW "bug." I made this little project during the days we lived at the "Big House" and I used my patient's wonderful workshop.

PS We had a 76 VW Camper Bus. Orange, with plaid curtains. We went all over in that thing! Sure wish we still had it. I had a VW Rabbit, and then years later, a VW Vanagon...bright red. Loved our V Dubs!!!

  2. Sooooo sweet, Dotsie! Such creative expression to be found in miniatures! I remember lingering as I tried to take in the details of a beautifully decorated dollhouse at the Smithsonian's American History Museum. Fascinating!

I'm glad you didn't crop out the beetle. :)

  3. I remember doing one of these for my sister in law when she and my brother were marrying. I did an old fashioned kitchen.
I remember Colleen Moore's dollhouse in Chicago. It was always the first display that I visited. So many hours of enjoyment just being in that dark room with the wonderful display in front of me.

  4. How delightful! That VW bug just makes the photo!

I remember a friend going to the exhibit in Chicago and sharing postcard images and her thoughts on it. I was fascinated then and I am fascinated today. I had no idea that you were a minaturist!

  5. That is so sweet! What a fun project and thoughtful gift for your sister. It's nice to see the old VW in the background too. I had a doll house when I was a little girl and loved playing with it and the furniture. Our daughter had a FP Doll house and I played along with her too.

  6. I've spent many hours with the miniature rooms at Science and Industry. The boys loved the u-boat, the trains and the coal mine. While they did what they liked with their dad, I was left to dream of having my own little house to decorate. What a treasure that little room must have been! I hope it's still around.

    Best,
    Bonnie

  7. Podso, thanks for the link to my Blog post! Your room box is especially darling for its personal association with your sister. A room box is a great way to get started doing miniatures because they don't take up much room and can be like a 3D scrapbook for some special memory.

Wonderful play goes on and there are many books like Rumer Godden's The Doll's House, Tasha Tudor's Dollhouse, Big Susan by Elizabeth Orton Jones, ....

  11. How fun, and what a wonderful memory that dredged up, huh! We built a dollhouse for our daughter and I need to get it to her so she can renovate it for her kids. :-) Very cute idea that you created that tiny nursery for her.

  12. I have been fascinated by these miniatures since I saw Tasha Tudor's dollhouse at Colonial Williamsburg about 5 years ago.

It was so lovely - even miniature Beatrix Potter collectables in the cabinet in the dollhouse hallway.

The setting with the VW provides the perfect context for the photo.

  16. We, too, enjoy miniatures and one of the most delightful places to see wonderful examples is at the Children's Museum in Indianapolis. I delight in just perusing the rooms. And the Grandpa had such a grand time building the doll house two of his granddaughters now own. Have a grand day and thanx for the memories!!! Cathy

  19. Such a sweet gift for your sister. I once made a dollhouse kit and furnished it. Then in a frenzy of downsizing in one of our moves I sold it! I wonder if the person who bought it still has it?
