being friends

Friendship takes work. It takes planning and pursuing, and when you no longer have little kids to group around, it doesn't happen so easily. Luci Shaw, a poet/writer who years ago often hired me to babysit her five kids, writes, "...friendship means frequent phone calls, letters, face-to-face visits––staying in touch. Because without touch, that contact, we feel isolated, and we'd be neglecting a person who is precious to us."
And her friend, Madeleine L'Engle writes about, " ...our sense of the grace and glory and absolute necessity of friendship."
The card (above) with quotes were sent to me by Boniface whose friendship I treasure. It's such a pleasure to hear what she's thinking ... on paper ... and in the mail! (And she usually decorates the outside of the envelope with a depiction of something that I love--like an old stack of dishes--smilin'.)

  1. Wow. I wish you'd shown the envelope.
Friendship definitely takes communication, and a lot of give, not just take.
    Have a great week.

  2. I enjoyed this post for many reasons, plus finding out about you babysitting for famous folks. Who knew?

As to Bonnie, I did know that! :) She, the famous one of letters.

  6. Friendship does take a lot of time and effort. We've moved four times in our marriage as my husband's career required. I now find myself with good friends in CA, TX and S.C. as well as here. Each move has had me worried about leaving friends behind and making new ones. I've found that one never leaves a good friend. And now I have my blogging friends and you are one of them.

    Best,
    Bonnie

  7. Dotsie: That isn't a window. It's a mirror. Same feeling as a window!

Glad you liked the recipe. The rule of thumb for cooking any fish is ten minutes an inch. For the salmon, I have the pan really, really hot. And, the pan I use is a cast iron skillet given to me over 25 years ago by an elderly sitter who had it for 40 years prior to that. Nothing sticks to that pan!

    Best,
    Bonnie

  8. Podso,
Adored your post of friendship. I've heard it said that a friend is a gift that you give to yourself. Like you, I enjoy real paper mail from lifelong friends, as well. It's like the reaching out and touching them (or at least something that they have touched). Thank you for being a dear blog friend.
    Fondly,
    Pat
