the empty seat

We met for coffee ... just friends grabbing some time in the late afternoon. Something we try to do since our paths don't cross that often and we want to stay connected. We invited a friend who moved to Austria in August. Normally she would have been with us for coffee. We "skyped her," and it worked. She "sat" at the end of the table and joined our conversation. It was great! Amazing our technology today. I wonder if I'll live long enough not to be amazed. The image on the computer screen is part of her little flat on the top floor of their tall building. She took us on a tour with her laptop. After she "hung up" to go to bed (she is 6 hours ahead of us) her chair seemed strangely empty and quiet.

  1. I hope not to live long enough to cease being amazed. Skype is a runner-up to the real thing, but so nice to have something in the running at all! Amazing. Coffee with friends is the best.

    So were y'all playing tic-tac-toe??

  2. My sweet daughter-in-love and I Skyped yesterday. She used her laptop to show me their new (old) house. I'd say Skype is somewhere between a letter and a visit. And your visit over coffee is a brilliant idea.

  4. Isn't Skype Wonderful?? We have it to visit our daughter, son-in-law and baby grandson who live 3000 miles away from us! We try to do this once a week and it's great as we can watch our grandson grow. Glad you got to visit your friend this way. Pamela

  5. What a lovely idea to include your absent friend in this way, and I love the cup at her seat! And I hope you continue to be amazed -- as I hope I will be also -- till the ends of our lives! Technology is staggering.

And thank you for your kind words of sympathy on the loss of my father earlier this month; they were much appreciated.

    Best wishes,
    Cass

I LOVE this! We still send emails to our son & daughter-in-law in Japan, but perhaps we should give Skype a go! :)
    Wishing you a happy one!

  9. That's fantastic. I think personally we are in a time of Reniassance. I think we will look back and realize that the evolution happened online. Creativity knows no bounds online right now.

  11. Podso,
What a lovely way to stay connected with distant friends! I wish we'd had that technology when "Mr. Ed" was in the service and stationed overseas! A year's separation was unbearable for the boys and I at times. To have had that connection would have made the time apart more bearable!Thank you for sharing another way to stay in touch with friends!
    Fondly,
    Pat
