valentines

There's something about Valentine's Day that rings in my heart. It's not so much a romantic time. It evokes childhood memories of making valentines. I think that's it. It was one of my favorite times of the year. I remember decorating shoe boxes with red tissue paper and hearts, cutting a slit in the top of the box, and proudly carrying it to school. Throughout the week we'd place our valentines in each other's boxes. There the boxes would be, all proudly lined up at the side of the room, waiting for the party day when they'd be opened and then carted back home, filled with valentines from friends. And even as an adult, making valentines is just something I do nearly every year. Silly, I know.

I've been reading my favorite great-aunt's journal, so I decided to take a photo of her as a 21 year-old, and use it on my valentines. I wish I'd known her as a young woman, but through reading tidbits in her journal, I'm getting some idea of her life as a young woman.

Happy Valentine's Day!

  3. My memories of making valentines and the little 'mailbox' are so similar to yours and I did the same with my children. I hope they still do that now in the schools. Your valentine's with your Aunt's picture are fantastic. What a great idea. Her journal must be very interesting...taking a peek into yesteryear!

    Happy Valentine's Day, Dot!

  8. Podso,
YES! I adore the homemade Valentines. .. yours are precious with the photo of your aunt!I haven't made any handmade Valentines this year, but I've found the mechanical ones (reproduced) at a local antique shop. I just made a purchase today and mailed them to some very special pen pals of nearly a decade of correspondence! Happy Valentine's Day Podso!

  12. When we went to Kayla's 11th birthday party Friday night, she had her Valentine box on the counter ready to take to school - - - so at least HERE they still do Valentine boxes!

  13. I loved making those boxes to hold my valentines from school mates. It was a tradition in our neighborhood to sneak cards into doors of kids and not sign them. We'd all get together afterwards and try to figure out which cards came from which kids.

Hope you get lots of valentines in your box! I'd love to get one of those you made. Very nice and how special to have the perfect family photo to use.

    Best,
    Bonnie

  14. Podso, What sweet Valentines-I love that you used your aunt on them. I like to use pictures of my ancestors in my pieces to keep the connections to my past alive. AND I can't wait to try that Ham and Cheese souffle recipe. Have a happy Valentines day!

Oooh...me too...me too! Hehe! I mean, I loved making my valentine box for school too! It really was my favorite thing about Valentine's Day as well! I love how you used your great aunt's photo on these beautiful cards, Dotsie! Thank you so much for sharing them with us for the Sunday Favorites repost party this week!
