The Poppies Blow

Red is the color of the poppy flower that I remember sticking on my shirt as a child. I knew it stood for Fla*ders Field in WW I (where many poppy flowers grow) and the soldiers that gave their lives there. Over time Memori*l Day has come to be a time to remember all our fallen soldiers, not just those from
WW I.

I was out in the country this past weekend and spotted an elderly lady selling poppy flowers outside a store. I hadn't seen that in a long time. I dropped some money into her box and tucked the bright flower in my shirt button. It brought back childhood memories when Memori*l Day was a bigger deal. But I also bought it to remember something much bigger. I'm remembering in gratitude those that lost their lives defending our freedom.

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place;
and in the sky The larks,
still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
                ~Lt. Colonel John McCrae

  1. I remember those red poppies too, from childhood. They were of made of heavy paper (like a paper plate) with a black center.

    Your little Dutch houses are more finely detailed than the ones I have that belonged to my mom...but I do love the little things!

    Happy Memorial Day weekend.

  2. I remember being given those paper poppies in grade school *way back when*.

    Thankfully, our family has only seen one fatality in a war (speaking of in the 20th century), the brother of Gary's grandfather in WWI.

    Will be hanging out the flag for the weekend and on beyond that. Ours is tattered and must buy a new one later on today. Seems to mean more this year than before...

  3. Great post! I remember those poppies too. It has been a few years since I've seen the men selling them. I think they were American Legion people and unfortunately I think they are getting fewer and fewer as time goes on. Love your header - great pics!

  7. Hi Ms.P...

    I was just reading Keetha's comment and I too had forgotten all about the little red poppies that were worn for Memorial Day as a remembrance! I'm so glad for that refreshing of my memory, my friend! I just haven't seen anyone do that for years...kind of sad! Nevertheless, I am so very thankful for each and every man and woman who have so bravely served and sacraficed for our great country! Let freedom ring!!! What a grand post to share with us today for Memorial Day...thank you, Dotsie!!!

    Have a super and safe Memorial Day weekend, my friend!
