Knowing Its Own Mind

This may be one of my favorite posts of all times ... just because I love the colors on this house. Not that I'd have them on my own house, but I love that someone enjoys color enough to bravely do this. Here we go:

"Muddy colored walls are nothing but a blight. So are undecided colors that compromise ... [such as] blues that are neither sea, sky, nor good old cornflower. There should never be a doubt what your color has to say .... It may be chalk blue, watermelon pink, lemon yellow, grass green, chocolate brown, cafe au lait, warm gray––anything on earth you like, just as long as it knows its own mind."

So wrote Dorothy Draper (1889-1969)  in 1939, in her book Decorating is Fun! How to Be Your Own Decorator.

Hmm... what are the colors in my house saying?

Reposted from two summers ago, because I still think this house is great!  See Chari's Happy to Design  for more repeat posts!

  1. You know, you can't look at that photo and not smile. :) There's a clapboard house a few blocks away that's a lovely shade of chartreuse. Loads of flowers out front as well.

    Very wonderful!

  2. Whoa, now that house is bright! I guess if there are no restrictions within a neighborhood, people can express their individuality to their heart's content. I, for one, am extremely glad that I live in a neighborhood where there are covenants in place to govern garish and bright colors on a homeowner's property! LOL

  3. For some reason those colors on that particular house just seem to work. And they make me smile! Those folks know what they like, that's for sure! It doesn't always come off so well, but in this case I think it's great!!

  4. I love the quote. You can take that quote and apply to more than colors! Love the house too! Not that I would paint mine that color, mine you.

  5. Now that is a confident person! It would certainly stand out in the neighborhood!

  6. So....two years later is that brilliantly colored house still the same colors? If that were my house I think I might experiment with changing the chimney colors from time to time because it would be so easy to repaint!

An artist lives in this house, yes?

And Dorothy knows color. Don't you just love the names of colors and the images that pop into our heads when we hear them?

I have been painting a simple coat rack this week. I've got 4 different coats on it now, and it still isn't right. Today, I'll mix up the color of lichen in shadow, and see how that looks.

    Wishing you a beautiful Sunday!

Sorry, I remember now that you asked about the tours in the garden. We do tours for the tour company but also every year do a tour for a charity when people from over the Island com and sometimes smaller groups ask to come from around her like a church group or Women's Institute etc and sometimes a passerby but we are off the main road a bit. So,too bad you weren't closer we could have tea and you could tell me all your interesting stories!

    Take care,
    Carolyn

  12. Hi Ms.P...

What a great post to share with us for Sunday Favorites this week, my friend! You probably realize by now that I love, love, LOVE COLOR!!! Hehe! Well, I'm with you...probably wouldn't be "gutsy" enough to do my own home in these colors but I sure enjoy seeing them on this pretty home! Really...they just make me smile!!! Ohhh...and I always name my colors...watermelon red, buttery yellow, spring green, etc. There are just sooo many fabulous shades and hues of color out there!!!

How are you doing today, sweet friend? I hope that my little note finds you well! Thank you again for joining in with Sunday Favorites...loved this post!

    Warmest wishes,
    Chari @Happy To Design

  13. There's a large, two-story, quite old home in a neighboring community the same shade of purple and the trim is the same shade of green. It's in a neighborhood of stately older homes. I wonder what the neighbors think. One thing is for sure, the owners have no trouble giving visitors directions!

    Best,
    Bonnie
