spelling bee

As I read letters from my grandmother it's apparent she was a good writer, had nice handwriting, and her spelling was perfect (at least I haven't found a misspelled word yet, not that I'm looking, but the editor in me can't help but notice them ...)

When I found this little schoolbook of hers from 1903 I thought it might be a key to her good spelling. The doodles on the inside cover could have been mine.  :-)

  1. I think of my father who went to the eighth grade and then quite to work and help the family. His penmanship was perfect, as was his spelling...so different from today.

  2. It seems penmanship was so important back in the day. Now our kids just get on the computers and rarely think about writing. Love that you have such an old book of your grandmother's. Special!

  5. Podso,
I'm chuckling! My MoMa and I went through letters once when I was in elementary school. My Aunt with the PHD always wrote water... watter! MoMa always wanted me to use proper grammar, spelling and to have good penmanship. I hope, I've done her proud. At least, I can spell water. HA! Thank you for sharing with us today!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  7. My parents had very nice penmanship. Apparently my maternal grandmother did as well for I believe it was she that recorded the names and birth dates of her seventeen children in the family bible. I enjoy coming across any type of correspondence or recordings of handwriting from a time gone by.

    Best,
    Bonnie

  8. Penmanship isn't valued today as it once was. It's a pity. Computers and spell check have done away with the ability to spell too.

  9. I stopped to look at that gorgeous book. That would make you a great speller! Maybe one day you can show that to Emma?
