sticker shock

Was at a gathering for some women the other night. Most of us were "older" ---probably over 50.  And there were about five "younger" women in their 30s or 40s. The younger women sort of kept to their own group. I was a little disappointed as I had looked forward to getting to know them.

When I mentioned this to the Gardener, he reminded me that when I was young I probably did the same thing.  "But I'm not old like those old women were that you're talking about."

"I think my dear, that you might be." Ouch. That's not my perception of myself at all. How does this growing older thing come upon us so quickly? I don't feel any older than those younger women, but occasionally an experience like this comes to remind me that I am. It's kind of like sticker shock. I'm sure some of you understand.

  1. Yes! At church, I am drawn to the hip young couples, living on the cutting edge of life. I feel so in tune with them, and they ignore me. I know what I must look like to them and they can't see beneath the age. It is a shocker. But I still hover nearby!

  2. I understand completely! When I was young(er), I looked much younger than I actually was. That really didn't please me at all. When I was twenty-one, many people thought I was still in grade school!!! So, it was somewhat of a shock when that no longer happened. Now I'm just happy with the age I am and how I look (most of the time).

  4. Hi Podso,
I smiled because last week when we went for a drive we saw a 'kid' who looked to be nine years old driving a big tractor and then we talked about an 85 year old man who we had thought was about seventy so I laughed and said you know you are getting old when.....
I always liked people older then me by a generation for some reason-good thing as I spend a fair bit of time visiting my Mom at the nursing home she is in.Maybe, they make me feel young!
Remember,we are only as old as we feel.... aren't we?

  5. Yeah, I totally get this (as you know from a recent post of mine), and as a matter of fact, our oldest daughter's dance teacher calls me "Ma". Sorta cute, but sorta not!

  6. What a good illustration of aging... sticker shock! Why is it that I have a 23 year old women living inside my 50ish body just screaming to get out?
There are times though that I am so happy and satisfied to be just the age I am! Like today!
Thanks for making me grateful today. And for the chuckle!

  8. I love the 'sticker shock' allusion!
I work in a field that traditionally attracts younger people, in a city of retirees, so it's an interesting contrast. Age means little to me - it's all about the other person's interests and my interest in him/her. In my head I guess I'm about 35!

  9. Hi, I agree with you, when Im talking to younger people, I think I'm just as young. When did I become an older woman, I'm still so cool and so are you!!!
