the old and the new
I get the urge to change things around every now and then. I've had on my mind to sell this old table that for many years has been our dining room table. We bought it from a retired couple who lived in Pennsylvania and raised their family around it. I wonder what stories they'd tell about the table? The problem with these wonderful old oak tables is that they can expand forever. And stretch it out we did-- one time sitting 13 people around it. The difficulty is keeping such a long table stable with only the center support. We finagled all kinds of ways, but it became sort of a pain, as each time we were having a large group, we were under the table putting in the supports we'd made. Some of our extra leaves were homemade. I never liked it's wideness, as it crowded our small dining room.
But when I got down to seriously selling it, I couldn't. With new eyes I saw the beauty of its age. I remembered home schooling our boys at it. Hundreds of people have sat around that table. I thought about all the dinner parties, family meals, holiday celebrations ... it's a big part of our history as hospitality is important to us. So we decided to see what it looked like down to its small round size in the kitchen. Loved it.
And the very next day the P*ttery B*rn catalog arrived. Guess what I saw in it? Not that I'm a slave to trends, but it's kind of nice to see PB selling a new version of our vintage table.
Now the question is, the old chairs around the table: to paint or not, and if so, what color? Black. White. Blue. Or not at all. I'm leaning towards the first color.

Hi Dotsie...
ReplyDeleteOhhh...I love your old oak table, my friend! I have always wanted one like that! I'm sooo glad that you decided to just downsize it instead of selling. It sounds like you have sooo many wonderful and precious memories centered around the family table! Hehe...I just giggled when you showed the PB table...sooo awesome, my friend! You know, I think if you are going to paint the chairs...they would look fabulous in black! Just my "five cents" worth! Hehe! You'll have to let us know what you decide!
Well dear friend, I just wanted to come by to say thank you for all your visits to my place...to the veranda and to take a peek at my birthday bouquet! I always enjoy your visits and sweet notes, Dotsie! Thank you!!!
Warmest wishes,
Chari @Happy To Design
Hi Dotsie, I always say if you keep something long enough, it will come back in style. :)
ReplyDeleteI think the chairs would be nice painted black. It's a beautiful table.
It's part of your family now, how could you turn it out, or give it to strangers!
ReplyDeleteI love the subtle French navy in your quilt - what about that colour for your chairs?
You made a lot of memories there, I would keep it for sure. If you did not want to paint it, just getting some seat cushions and a pretty centerpiece....table clothes for Fall, could change up the look.
ReplyDeleteI say... black! Vintage is the thing and you can't buy real family vintage. Something with a story! Now that's priceless! :)

What a joy to be content with what we have. Trends come and go.. but contentment.. that is priceless.
ReplyDeleteBlack! You can always add blue and white to the chairs in cushions or the table. I love that table. Pottery Barn must be taking it's lead from you! Now, if you ever want to get rid of that fabulous quilted tea pot wall hanging, I'll be happy to take it off your hands!
ReplyDeleteBest,
Bonnie
Yes, black, and distress them a bit too. Gary does a black painted finish all the time and it looks so good a bit worn.
ReplyDeleteAnother good look is to have the table top the wood color and paint the base. The contrast can be so cool.
More photos after, please. :)
(forgive me for sounding like a giddy teenager!)
Love your table and its history. Looking forward to seeing what you end up doing with it. I do think it looks charming as it is right now too.
ReplyDeleteI always love to see pictures of your happy blue and yellow kitchen. I'm working on mine...
ReplyDeleteWhen I first looked at your photos, I thought to myself, "she could paint something." I'd say yes to the chairs but no to the table.
ReplyDeleteI'd also do them in a blue milk paint which will be rich, wear well and bring out the color of your accessories. That style chair does really well in colors. I can't see black for your room -- I'd use a color for the chairs that's already there. Though the style is often done in black.

I am so glad you decided to keep your table. I have such a soft spot for things with lots of history... and, this piece seems to have a lot of GOOD history. I really like your idea of black for the chairs. That will give a fresh look!!
ReplyDeleteWe had a round table like this when the kids were growing up, but after 25 years, it sagged terribly. Glad you were able to figure out how to keep yours!
ReplyDeleteAs for the chairs - black sounds nice!

Zuzu
Great wonderful old table...the kind that could really tell some stories of it's own...I vote to paint the chairs black. Have a nice weekend.
ReplyDeleteAs I type this I am sitting at a table that my parents bought in 1954. Yes.. the family stories and history associated with this table goes on for ... 56 years! I have changed the chair as we finally wore them out. (I kept them though) Guess I'm pretty sentimental.
ReplyDeleteIf you feel that have to paint the set, what about black? Gosh.. that is a huge decision. Good luck!

I love when old things can be changed in some way to feel new again. Refreshing. And trends do seem to just repeat themselves. So it's back in style once again, kinda like 80's fashions them kids are wearin' these days... Maybe see you Sunday! =)
ReplyDeleteHey there
ReplyDeleteJust stopping by to catch-up. I LOVE that table! It's really great, especially if it expands. And I'd go black too with some distressing. It's the new thing don't cha know:)
Enjoy!
