savannah and spring

When we were in Savannah last week, I was surprised how "behind" its spring was, and found more blooming trees when we got home, further north. My guess is Savannah's was slower because its temperatures have been colder than normal by a larger degree than ours. Does that make sense? Here's some blossoms in our town today:

When my mother and I went for a little Easter drive today, we were struck by the symphony of blossoms. I don't think I've ever seen: forsythia, dogwood, tulips, fading daffodils, pear trees, cherry trees, vibrant pansies, ornamental cherry trees, wisteria, and azaleas ALL AT ONCE! And depending what road we drove on, some were coming, some were going, and some were "peaking." I guess it's all because of the cold weather this year.

(Photo: our neighbor's house today with a driveway full of Easter guests.) See Little Red House for more lovely mosaics.

  1. You are so right about so many flowers blooming at once. Daffodils are still blooming and usually have been long gone by now.

  5. Great pictures of the blooming trees. I am surprised Savannah wasn't further along. The pear trees here are already losing the flowers and everything is in full bloom here and we are north east of Atlanta.

  10. Here in the north east - our daffodils and crocuses are about the only thing in bloom. I did find some forsythia's beginning to open up yesterday. Other than that only the weeping willows have hints of green.

After temps in the 80"s on Friday and Saturday - we were back in the 50's yesterday - and waiting patiently for memorial day - when it should be safe to plant things!

Amazing how different each part of the world is!

  16. I remember being in Savannah when I was twenty years old. It was a magical place. I love the very historical feel to the place and its history. I looked behind all the gates of each property on the streets to get a glimpse of the gardens. I must go back to have a look again some time. Lucky you to be there during the time the trees are blooming. It must be heavenly. Valerie
