I'm (sort of) ashamed to say I have never made angel food cake from
scratch before. Odd because my mother made them all the time.
(Do you remember angel food cakes cooling upside down supported by a ketchup bottle?)
When I told (not so) Little One that we were having them over for her mom's birthday,
her immediate comment was "What are you doing for decorations?" Followed by
suggesting her mom's favorite was "angel cake" and cupcakes would be nice.
So off to P*nterest I went and found what I needed.
Since I totally focused on making them (no multi tasking),
they came out pretty good. Light and airy like,
well, something an angel would like to eat.
My favorite is the cream cheese frosting…and the very pale pink color.
Why I've photographed one with Mr. Rabbit I'm not sure.
But the bottom corner photo looks like I've climbed up into those
green leaves and am looking down on Rabbit talking to Cupcake at a party,
like in Sabrina, where she looks down from a tree at her heart throb flirting at a party.
Yum! I have never made it from scratch and always had angel food birthday cake into childhood . We had mocha icing : whipped cream with a tiny bit of coffee & choc sauce mixed in . Delicious.

ReplyDeleteMy great-grandmother is the last woman in my family to make angel food cakes. I do not recall them cooling upside down, but I do remember how wonderful they were. Now John thinks this should go on my short list of things to do. Ohhhhh...it's multi-tasking that gets us in trouble? Hmmm...could be!
ReplyDeleteMy mouth is watering! I haven't had angel food cake in ages. We used to make an orange one with a delicious orange glaze. I need to see if I can find that recipe.
ReplyDeleteYours looks quite festive.
They look delicious and I'm sure were enjoyed by all. I've never made an angel food cake from scratch and it's been years since I made one from a mix. My dear maiden aunt made one for our July birthdays every year (3 of us within a week!) and they were frosted with a lemon frosting. They were the best!
ReplyDeleteThe cupcakes look delicious and pretty in the wrappers, perfect for a birthday celebration.
ReplyDeleteI've only ever used the mix and my stand has always been a short juice glass that fits the circle just right.
They were the base I used for strawberry shortcake for our daughter's birthday in June.
Love your Sabrina shot! My mother made angel food cake just like yours.
ReplyDeleteSoooo adorable, your granddaughter making her requests on behalf of her mom! And she's thinking of decorations at her age...she must have an artsy bent. :)
ReplyDeleteI have never made an angel food cake from scratch either. Now it's on my list of baking projects, along with macarons!
Your cupcakes are lovely, as are your photos. I am fond of the "Sabrina" perspective...and I am fond of the movie too! (Do you like the older version with Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart, or the newer one with Julia Ormand and Harrison Ford?)
These looks absolutely delicious, I am like you I have never made an Angel food cake form scratch, but have wanted too. I remember my grandmother making hers from scratch and placing it on a soda bottle, It was so delicious, usually she would have strawberries on top. Thanks for sharing and for rekindling some memories.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Sue
Well done! Cute photos too!
ReplyDeleteI like Sabrina. I'll have to watch that again sometime!
Deanna
Good for you for making them from scratch!! I know that guilt...it's crazy!
ReplyDeleteI remember my mom making the angel food cakes for our very early birthdays (there were seven of us so she later started to buy the store bought ones...particularly when we had a store open 10 minutes away instead of an hour there on the Illinois prairie!). I remember her decorating them with whipped cream mixed with powdered sugar. She made them in a bundt pan and that always intrigued me.
Happy Birthday to your daughter (?)
XO,
Jane
I have never made one from scratch either. Only a box. Yours look divine! I love the tinted frosting!
ReplyDeleteAnd the idea of cupcakes too!
XO Kris
Pretty, pretty cupcakes with the loveliness shade of pink frosting! Pretty photos too. I have made Angel Food cake and it is rather involved. Lots of egg whites! It is wonderful but i also like the box ones. Very easy and delicious.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever made this either. I don't bake as much as I used to now but this looks so pretty. I mentioned you on my blog this morning! You'll know why as soon as you see my photos! haha! Enjoy your day! Sweet hugs!
ReplyDeleteOh they look delicious! :) not much of a 'from scratch' cake baker here either! I almost always used box mixes. At Christmas time I made a from scratch cake that I saw on a blogger's site and it was very good but truthfully, more expensive in the end than a box, though if Duncan Hines ever stops selling their spice cake mix this one would be my go-to substitute
ReplyDeleteI have made cakes but never cupcakes..and never angel food. Your cupcake and icing look delish! Enjoy your week ahead!
ReplyDeleteYum...Your cupcake looks delicious and with the rabbit it looks very festive.
ReplyDeleteMy Mother also made Angel Food cake! I never attempted it as my husband is not a big fan of it. Your cupcakes look beautiful, Dotsie. happy birthday to your Little One's Mom :)
ReplyDeleteMy mom would cool her angel food cake on a Coca-Cola bottle! It's been years since I've had that light, airy dessert. Your photos are wonderful.
ReplyDeleteLooks so so good and brings back lovely memories. My mother cooled hers on a bottle from the "medicinal cupboard". LOL. She had a funny story about how angel food cake was her specialty because she was the only person among her friends and family who had the patience to beat all those eggs to stiff peaks. And then when cake mixes came along any old person could make an angel cake so she lost her special talent!
ReplyDeleteOOO,yes indeedy...I DO remember them cooling on a ketchup bottle. hahhaa... I love these kind of memories.
ReplyDeleteOf course, now I am about to die for a slice of Angle Food cake...:)
Your angel food cup cakes look divine Dotsie - I would just love to taste one.
ReplyDeleteLovely story too!
My mother made angel food cake all the time and that may be why I don't! Loved your post and I may have to try cupcakes. Have a lovely week.
ReplyDeleteI've never made angel-food cake either but I don't think my Mama did either. I enjoyed your post and I'm sure those cupcakes were enjoyed as well.
ReplyDeleteOh they look yummy!
ReplyDeleteThe pink icing is one of my favorite colors in all the world
ReplyDeleteLooks and sounds yummy - especially with the cream cheese frosting. I have never made angel food cake from scratch.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by. Happy St. Paddy's Day!
The cream cheese frosting is my favorite too :) Lovely looking delicious cupcakes :)
ReplyDeleteThose cupcakes look so yummy and BTW I love the movie Sabrina, especially the remake ;)
ReplyDeletePodso,
ReplyDeleteYuMMy!!!
Since there are so few of us at any Birthday Celebration, we, too, have resorted to cupcakes!!! Your "Angel Cakes" look deliciously divine!!!EnJOY the celebration!!!
Fondly,
Pat
Can't say I've ever made an angel food cake from scratch either. I used to rely on boxes in a pinch, but now I only make things from scratch, and dairy free. Really so easy! And so much nicer! Yours look great. Best wishes, Tammy
ReplyDeleteLove angel food and this looks yummy! I love the shot with the bunny and your Sabrina reference - love that movie!
ReplyDeleteI use an old glass 7-up bottle that my Nan used to sprinkle her clothes with before ironing to hang my cake from:)
