scrapping in the thirties

Scrapbooking has been around a very long time apparently. My cousin recently sent me this crumbling scrapbook of his mom's, given to her by her grandfather, who apparently did all the cutting and pasting. My great grandfather was a very busy man with a successful building business, many rental properties, a family ministry ... yet he found time to do something like this for his granddaugthers? (since they were twins I'm guessing he made two books). The most interesting picture is the one of the woman in pants (this was the early 30s) looking in on the little girl having a tea party with her doll. I'd love to know the story behind this pic. I'm wondering why my great grandfather did this --no one seems to remember. I think I'd have picked many of the same pictures he did, but I guess that shouldn't be too much of a surprise.  :-)

  2. Podso,
Perhaps he was a great admirer of "art". This would have been a time in our history where "art" was beginning to take on a world of color! Like many of us, scrapbooking has a way of allowing us a release...a pasttime. In my Studio, I can lose track of time and my worries seem to disappear for those few hours! Interesting post!

  4. Verrrry interesting. I am kind of fascinated by that one illustration of the mom in slacks and the daughters having the tea party. It is amazing that your great grandfather made this scrapbook... and there are those who think it is a new thing. ;)

BTW, LOVE your new header mosaic!! I am still plotting on one myself. hee hee.

And, yes... I could use a sharp-eyed Little Person to spot those beads!

  6. This surprises me for a man to make a scrapbook; he was way ahead of his time.
I can't imagine a woman in pants back in the 30's, this image bears some research don't you think?

  10. What a great book, I remember having a scrapbook in the late 50's, don't know what happened to it though. I collect old postcards now! Hopefully you were given the book as a gift so can pass it on through the family. Have a great week, Jackie in Surrey, UK.
