simple things

I'm a detail person. I need to be for both my jobs. I like to take note of the small details of God's graces in my everyday life.

The other day I waited a long time at the drug store. And as I did, I watched the woman work at the cash register. I loved watching her hands work, and particularly the way she put things into a bag. Weird, I know.

I love the sound of tires on gravel. And my heart sings to the sound of a gentle rain. And a creaking porch swing, or the banging of a screen door. I used to love listening to my mother read a story and my heart still warms to the sound of her voice. I love the taste of a really sweet, juicy strawberry. Brightly colored yarn captivates me and I dream of how it will look as it molds around needles and goes to work becoming something. And I love the early mornings, when "the sun is at its best" and I have lots of energy.

Small, simple pleasures. At no cost, except to expend the energy to notice. These "gifts of joy" make the day more pleasant. It's even better when we slow down and and focus on them a bit. What would life be like without them?

  1. I love this post. Simple pleasures are the best. If people recognized them more, how much nicer life would be for them. Thanks so much for the "nudge" and reminding me what matters. (I love fresh strawberries! I have them in my garden, and look forward to the season.) Thanks again!

    Gentle hugs!

  2. This is awfully sweet, and I second you on the slam of a screen door (I remember wooden screens slamming so satisfactorily when I was a child!), and the crunch of gravel...totally love that as well.

My Gary has hands I love to watch, and tease him that he'd be a winner with dealing cards in Vegas. There's just *something* about his hands and the way they move.

I so get you, Dotsie. :)

  3. I agree on those simple pleasures. I can't remember when I heard a screen door slam or tires crunch on gravel but I love both of those sounds. To remember lying on the sofa with my head in mother's lap while she read to me is so sweet. And I love to watch people as they do things: bagging groceries, serving food (especially like watching flight attendants), tending to small babies/children in the park. You've made me want to slow down today and hone those senses.

    Best,
    Bonnie

  4. Your simple pleasures are mine, too...very much so. I have always been fascinated by peoples hands, I thought I was strange. They say so much about a person. And tires on gravel...the smell of rain, the dogs nails tapping on the wood floor as they walk...Oops, this isn't my post!

    Have a wonderful day, Dot!

    XO,
    Jane

  8. In meetings I always notice the rings on people's hands. I can tell you which men have the most unique wedding rings....not because I'm interested in their marital state but because most men's rings are plain gold bands so I really notice when they are unique.

  9. Dotsie, we share so many of the same joys... and, without appreciating and enjoying them as we do, life would be pretty grey. Love your post! Love it! blessings ~ tanna

  10. Those simple things are the things that one misses most when one is away from home. My favorite is the sound of the rain on the steel roof in the middle of the night.

  11. Podso,
As I read this post...first I, too have some of the similar joys. The sound of gentle rain, fresh strawberries and listening to my Moma read to my dad! Second, I could imagine the song. . .These Are a Few of My Favorite Things from the Sound of Music in the background. Lovely post!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  12. Sadly we don't have some of these sounds in the UK, like a screen door or the porch swing! Strawberries , yes there were some Spanish ones available in the supermarket but I much prefer English ones and there were some from Sussex a bit more expensive but worth it. This week I have has a lazy week, when I have done the housework I have sat in the conservatory enjoying the lovely weather and listening to the bird song, which starts with the dawn chorus and goes on during the day. It is like a lot of women chatting to each other. I love to see my washing drying on the line knowing it will smell so clean and fresh.
Your blog is a "gift of joy", have a great weekend, Jackie in Surrey, UK.
