gazing upward

Windows, doors, arches, narrow winding roads, umbrellas ... these all caught my eye when
we were in Germany for a few days (with quick hops into France and Switzerland.)
It seems I was always gazing upward to see windows up high with cheery window boxes overflowing with vibrant flowers. I only once saw someone actually caring for the flowers,
but they all obviously have tender attention.
The gray-shuttered window is where we slept and is in a flat over a butcher shop. The busy street sounds lulled me to sleep. I pretended it was a radio, which often puts me to sleep at home.
The inside of our friend's black umbrella was such a surprise.
Out came my camera!

  5. I like the window boxes, definitely a European trend as are shutters I think because they all have them.
    Decorative or functional?

  8. Podso,
Lovely window boxes. . .oh, dear friend, how I do remember!!! One of the nicest compliments I received while living in Europe was the unique color combination of my choice of floral hues in our window box. I chose pink, purple and yellow!!! Striking!!! Many nods and smiles from my German Nationalist neighbors!
Thanks for sharing these photos of the shuttered windows!!!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  15. Your window box photos are so pretty - I have to agree with Pondside about German/Swiss/Austrian window boxes. I remember them well and have a few photos of them in my archives, too.

The first photo with the arched window is striking!

  30. I love window boxes. When I was in Ireland a few years back I saw beautiful lush flowers all hanging down from so many window boxes. They looked so pretty. I once saw a man with a hose on a very long pole watering the plants that were hanging from the light posts.
