There are some unusual things about our garden this year. When have our winter pansies ever lasted so long? It must be all the rain and less than usual intense heat. We keep enjoying them. On the other hand, our beloved hydrangeas just aren't cuttin' it this year (no pun intended). Maybe all the rain has dragged them down, though you'd think from their name, they'd be dancing in the rain. They are hanging low, and in one bush, lots of flowerless new growth on top has suddenly appeared (see below by fence.)
Our bird bath is aged and needs to be replaced. But I rather like it's crackly, old personality. We weren't so thrilled when our neighbors a few years ago installed a fence, as it shrunk the park-like look of our back yard. But I have come to love it and it's a beautiful backdrop for a whole new section of garden. If you look closely between the rails you can see bits and pieces of the outdoor kitchen of the little girls next door. All kinds of delicious (mud) pies, cakes, jams and even salad dressings come from that kitchen!

I like that phrase: The garden is what it is....
ReplyDeleteIt's one of the joys of having a garden, to know it year by year as it changes daily and is never the same, with some plants thriving and some dying, some blooming profusely one year and then hiding behind new ones the next year... I am learning to take it as it comes, and not to try too hard to make things happen.
Yes, such differences depending on the weather. Beautiful flower photographs. Oh I'd probably rant for a month over a fence that closed off my view. How good that you can enjoy it now.
ReplyDeleteWhat it is beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteSmiles, Dottie
You have a beautiful garden! I'm not much of a gardener but I do so enjoy seeing other peoples gardens. Lovely mosaic and I am in love with your masthead, those chairs are so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteOh hydrangeas - hope that you get to cut some! It must be fun to live next to little girls like that!
ReplyDeleteI say leave the bird bath - so much character!!!
Thanks so much for all your sweet comments my dear friend!

How true - my garden always "Is what it is".. never perfect. Every year there's a different challenge- too wet, too dry, too many insect pests, etc. I try not to stress over it anymore.. just enjoy it for what it is..
ReplyDeleteLovely garden ~ beautiful mosaic photography ~ happy day to you ^_^
ReplyDeleteYep, when gardening that attitude will help. I love your flowers. Thanks for sharing, Kathy
ReplyDeleteyes, I have noticed changes in our gardens here too. Right now, I need to be out cutting back my hydrangeas as they are starting their winter leaf drop. Enjoy your spring/summery garden and have a wonderful week.
ReplyDeleteMy pansies are still going too. They are usually finished by now. Things in the garden are slow this year. Your mosaic is lovely though. Valerie
ReplyDeleteSo pretty...love the blues and purples with the yellow. It's so cheery! I agree with you that the fence is a lovely backdrop.
ReplyDeleteUnusual weather this year is producing many surprises in the garden. At least the neighbour's fence isn't one of those tall privacy ones, they really cut off the view.

The birdbath is PERFECT! You know I LOVE old and weathered. ;) Isn't it interesting how we can come to love something we first did not like? We had pansies last much longer than usual here, too. But, we have been lucky with the hydrangeas! Your garden is just beautiful, Dotsie. blessings ~ tanna
ReplyDeleteFlowers always bring joy! You've got a beautiful garden. I too go along with your decision in leaving the bird bath with its old personality:).
ReplyDeleteOh how lovely...what a pleasant place to enjoy and soak in God's beauty
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you enjoy gardening...we do..but especially flower gardening. My husband has a nose for bargains that is outstanding....grin. He/we are consistantly finding 'bargains' at Lowes just now. The latest 'bring-home' was a beautiful Hibicus for only $5. I suppose it has a disease....but I'm not looking for trouble....lol. It looks great on the patio. Have a blessed day! I like the little girl's kitchen...I remember those days...long long ago. Egg cartoons cut apart for dishes, and seeds from weeds to make pretend coffee. Childhood seemed an eternity long. Praise God for allowing us to grow up and be free and be born again. I'm thankful! so thankful.
ReplyDeleteYour garden looks lovely and I rather like the fence between you and the neighbours. It's not totally confining and you get to enjoy the little girls baking in their 'kitchen'. Oh the mud pies I made as a child and my own kids too. Sweet memories. My pansies are doing really well too and are just full of blooms. Must be the rain. Lots and lots of rain. And some sunshine now too. Enjoy the day.
ReplyDeletePodso,
ReplyDeleteLove the photos that accompany your post, dear friend!!!
We all have privacy feneces here on the Prairie, but our neighbors fence is quite aged and I adore the holes to 'grab a peek' when I'm out~and~about! They've told me they do the same!!! Would love to see the neighbor children making mud pies in their outdoor kitchen.
The temperatures have risen here on the Prairie and I fear our days of lush and green will now be short lived. It has been such an amazing Spring!!!
Fondly,
Pat
Gardens seem to do whatever they want/can. Some years the roses flourish, in others, the vegetables. The growth on your hydrangea looks healthy - perhaps the blooms will follow later. It's a beautiful garden, in any case.
ReplyDeleteThe birdbath does have a loved look but it's kind of nice.
ReplyDeleteMerle.......
I love the aged birdbath, I would keep it for sure. Your flowers are lovely. Love the pansies, pretty shots. Have a happy week ahead!
