"The sky is blue so we know where to stop mowing."
(Harold T. Stone)
Yesterday I mowed the lawn to my delight. Yes I said that. I love to mow the lawn and have been the mower most of my life. It seems (though I may have a selective memory) that I mowed our lawn when I was a kid as the rest of the family had hay fever. Poor me. But my delight yesterday is partly because I felt so good after having a cortisone injection in my painful knee. I'm enjoying freedom from pain, but I mostly love mowing right now because the grass is thick and high and very green. I hate mowing in the heat of summer when the grass is fickle and it's hard to see where the mower has been. Rather, I love to mow when the rows are obvious and it looks like something has been accomplished when I am finished.
The same with cutting hair. I find it relaxing to cut someone's hair. I've always cut the Gardener's, and it's a good time to chat together, though I must say, our talks are shorter as it doesn't take as long to cut his hair anymore. :-)
The Gardener does most of the other yard work; the mowing is too hard on his long back. So we work it out nicely. And what a thrill it is to see the first blossoms on our new little dogwood tree he planted last fall to replace the old trees we had to cut down.
I'm sure there must be other women who mow lawns
and who (unprofessionally) cut hair
... and who have painful knees and new trees!

Sweet little dogwood tree coming right along so well for you.
ReplyDeleteYes, I mow the lawn and wish that I could say that I enjoy it. I would if it were level and if the weather were never warmer than 70F. I'm such a fragile flower don'tcha know.
Your yard and garden are lovely!
Nope, never been the mower, growing up or here when we had grass. Some men consider this their domain, and who am I to argue? :-)
ReplyDeleteNice to see blooms or your new dogwood.

My husband and I mow the lawn together. He starts by edging with the trimmer and I mow until he's done. It's really difficult for me to push the mower on some steep parts of our yard.
ReplyDeleteI cut my husband's hair, too.
Love that dogwood tree. The dogwood is our provincial flower.
I mow our property with a riding mower, so I can do it even if my back is hurting, but I do love it! It's my time!
ReplyDeleteI also cut my husbands hair and my son's hair. I also sometimes trim up my daughters' hair.
Your place is looking wonderful!

We nev er had grass to mow in Brooklyn! Our property was postage stamp size. Now we have a bit of a lawn and have to buy a mower -- any suggestions on what to buy? We don't need a sit on -- not that much grass --more a gas powered push style mower.
ReplyDeleteLove your Dogwood tree!
I used to mow on the riding mower (when I was pregnant with my third child, I mowed up through 7 months!), while my husband pushed the edges and trim. I'm really not sure how I got out of that job, but am now only occasionally asked to help.
ReplyDeleteAs for hair cutting...I know how I got out of that job! After a particularly bad cut I gave my son, he went for a professional job. The stylist looked at his hair and asked incredulously, "Who cut your hair last?!"
(I do trim my girls' hair sometimes. I do okay at straight-across-the-bottom cuts.)
Glad you enjoyed cutting with pain-free knees!
I wouldn't dare cut anyone's hair - i get heck from my hairdresser for messing about with my own bangs! Sore knees, yes - and a sore hip now and again.....and until we got a ride-on mower, I was the lawn mower at our house!
ReplyDeleteI love to watch other people cut lawns. I'm the weeder.
ReplyDeleteYour baby dogwood is beautiful. It's a favorite tree that I grew up surrounded by. Here, they don't do well. Glad to hear that you are finding relief from knee pain.
Best,
Bonnie
I'm glad your pretty dogwood is blooming and healthy. We have to have 10 trees removed from our property line soon and will be planting one (1) . Don't know what yet. I mowed our lawn with the push mower for years until 3 summers ago when I had the rotator cuff problem (still do). Hubby bought a riding mower but I couldn't even steer it! But, I still cut his hair. I have for 36 years but now it's easier as I just use the razor and shave his dear head. :) Your garden looks beautiful. Enjoy the day and weekend. Hugs, Pam
ReplyDeleteI'm with you... I have always been the one to mow the grass. Sometimes in the spring it has to be done twice a week. Then in August it tends to get very dry and doesn't grow much. I don't have knee paint but oh, those feet can get a-hurtin'!
ReplyDeleteI had always cut my husbands hair until our oldest grew up and became a beautician. She keeps us looking spiffy now.
In the past few years we have noticed one of our Eastern Redbud trees is in decline. Thought about replacing with a dogwood :)
I cut my own hair and sisters' hair when we were young, but I can't mow the lawn.
ReplyDeletePretty dogwood flower!
Well...I have to mow the lawn or pay someone so I usually mow. I don't mind in spring at all! I don't like it in the dead of summer when it is very hot. I am one of those people that think anything over 72 degrees is an abomination, ha ha :)
ReplyDeletePodso,
ReplyDeleteMowing the lawn can be enjoyable, but for me it wasalways another chore! Usually while "Mr. Ed" was overseas or down~range with the Army, but now I enjoy when he goes out to do the mowing...so I can mop the floors!!! It's a win~win for us both!!!
Your lawn looks fabulous, by the way, dear friend!!!
Fondly,
Pat
Yes - I mowed my lawn for years before I moved where I am now (can't say I enjoyed doing so). Trimmed my own hair several times between major cuts, and both knees scream at me when I over do. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks bunches for stopping by and nice comment.
Have a great weekend!
I've read about women like you! My husband would think I'd been taken over by aliens if I mowed the lawn. Or offered to cut his hair. (**
