dreams made real

It's interesting to think about how every piece of architecture most likely
begins with pencil and paper, or computer-aided drawings. All begin as a dream or idea.
I'm always drawn to architecture of all types so I had a hard time choosing from among many
photos for Mary's challenge today. These first three are all of the city where I live,
and I love this one above that shows the contrast between old and new.
When our boys were little we often went up to the city to watch construction
on some of these tall buildings, especially the tallest one in the background.
Chicago last fall.

A large house in a small Pennsylvania town. As much as I love
the geometric details of large city buildings,
I think I prefer the gentle curves of an old home.

  1. Theses are wonderful photos Dotsie. I like the contrast of old and new in the city but I also prefer older architecture in buildings and homes. The older building had so much detail and character. They just don't build them like they used to!

  2. I agree with you. I'll take a charming old house any day! Although I do admire the art and the science that goes into creating any building. The engineering aspect is so far out of my realm.

  4. The title of this post is so appropriate, Dotsie. I love the old houses and buildings the best, but the new ones can be fascinating as well. My favorite pic is the second one because I like the contrast of the old and new.

    Have a good day!

  5. I love the shot of Chicago Dotsie, and even more so the house with the awesome porch.
How true that all these wonderful architectural delights start out on paper.

  6. Wonderful photos, Dotsie. I'm agreement with preferring the gentler lines of smaller buildings. So much more accessible.

  7. I would've SO loved to live in an old home at any time of my life....but it just wasn't in the cards, as the saying goes. Older homes have so much character, inside and out! Thanks for the great pics!

  10. I definitely prefer the oval shape of an old house. You live in a very charming city, the contrasting photo with the old buildings and then the new ones in the background reminds me of Winnipeg, I love seeing the old and new together.

  12. Oh, your photographs are stunning. I love that you made me remember that all architecture begins with pencil and paper. Chicago is a beautiful city. I lived in NYC when I was a young woman, and although it' architecture is beautiful, I also prefer the homey feeling of a charming old house.

  13. The buildings always fascinated me also, and I like I like gentle curve in a home, or building.

Love the contrast of styles in your 2nd photo. From the little glimpses I've seen in movies, etc... Chicago looks amazing!
Hope you all have a great weekend!

  16. I, too, love the look and feel of an "older" building...I think of it's history, the people, the lives that came and went. However, those are great pictures of buildings that like my home began on paper!...:)JP

  17. What a wonderful assortment of architectural styles! It is certainly exciting to see the big buildings going up, but there is a special place in my heart for the simple and beautiful styles of years past. :)

Thanks so much for contributing to Thursday's Inspiration. xoxo

  18. I do love architecture, too, Dotsie. I can appreciate several styles... but, it is the older homes that delight me most... and old churches... Washington National Cathedral is one of my most favorite. I enjoy knowing you took your boys to see the construcion. blessings ~ tanna
