not much pine

Years back the Gardener's college basketball coach wrote a book about "The Sweet Scent of Pine." It was about all you learn sitting on the bench, hoping for your turn to go into the game. The night before my mother became ill, we went to an exciting college game at the big arena in our city. There was not much bench sitting that day as foul trouble kept the bench active. I love a close game that keeps us on the edge of our seats, and this one did not disappoint. Plenty of action.

I was fascinated by the views of a packed arena. But what really impressed me was the people in blue standing at every section, facing away from the game (that must have been hard!) with full attention constantly focused on studying the stands. Watching for anything suspicious I guess. Yes I felt safer, but saddened that this has to be so. (phone pictures, sorry!)

  1. I can imagine that the security people have to stay focused on their job at hand despite an exciting game going on. You're right. It is a shame that we live in a world where security has to be so vigilent.

  3. Having so much security . . . works to make us feel safe and at the same time it makes us feel very vulnerable. Our world has really taken a wrong turn.

  4. Basketball used to be my favourite sport to watch, but then our son took up hockey and our focus shifted. I'm not one for watching sports on TV but love a high school or college game.

  5. It has been so long since I've been present at a game (college!!) that I hadn't even thought about security being necessary.

  8. Just think how much those security people miss! Kind of a sad commentary on our times, isn't it?
I'm not much for watching sports, although a good hockey game (live) keeps my attention.

  10. A wonderful mosaic - some phoned take amazing photos now!

Basketball doesn't have a huge following here - even tho our national team has done well for a little country.
Rugby rules here - I love the excitement of being at a big game too!

  11. What has happened to us? I saw zero dark thirty last evening and was chilled by the danger and evil that is all around us that we don't know about!
I'm thankful for every soul who is a
"sheepdog" watching over the flocks of people and ready to stike evil!
    Great reminder!

  12. unfortunately the sign of the times - sadly. I guess if it feels safer we should be grateful for their presence.

  15. I love basketball--I used to play when younger, and yes the scent of pine is familiar..lol! Security is more important everywhere these days--I'm glad for it but like you I wish it wasn't so necessary. Sadly, those days seems to be over.

  18. Fun candid photos- I had not heard of the 'pine' saying. Looks like an exciting game. I also enjoy two evenly matched teams instead of a runaway score. Have a great week ahead :)

  19. Oh that had never even occurred to me that security would have to be high. Yes, I don't like living in such a world either, but these are the facts. I don't much enjoy the seating in such places so prefer watching from the comfort of home. I would imagine that I'm missing out on a lot of the feel of the game that way.

  20. Living in U of L and U of K territory, I have not ever watched a basketball game, other than the ones that my grandson Thomas has played in. I have so many friends that live and breathe basketball, but there is so much more in life. You got some really great cell phone image shares though...fun! happy day your way~
