Neglected

Quite a few years ago our now deceased but much beloved dog ate a chunk out of the Betty Crocker cookbook I received at my wedding shower. I mourned. For me, she is the premier of cookbooks, the stable one to go to. I eventually found another worn copy at a used book shop.

But strangely I've been feeling a bit sorry for my cookbooks, lined up quietly like soldiers waiting to be called to duty. It's become so easy to grab a recipe from the computer, or pull out a scribbled "how to" written down at a friend's delicious dinner party. Or just to pull ingredients out of the frig and cook whatever comes together.
There's a few things I always pull Betty out for, one is an apple pie.
Old friends are coming for dinner tonight. It will be a simple table, and a simple fare,
with concentration on just enjoying being together on a rainy night.
There are friends like this––as comfortable as "old shoes." Friends that we're blessed to
grow old older with. We'll sit around, maybe listen to some of the "oldies," have conversation, put the
coffee pot on, and lace the pie with a little vanilla ice cream, per the Gardener's request.
It should be fun.

  1. I was given the same cookbook as a shower gift in 1973. Mine was in 'ring' style. About 10 years ago it was more rag than page, so I started looking in the second hand stores. I found one for me and one for my daughter and DIL. I've since found another that his put away. Friends had their 'Joy of Cooking' and 'Better Homes and Gardens' but I found Betty Crocker to have the easiest and most adaptable recipes. My basic pies, veg and sauces all started with BC.

  2. Oh Podso, you are so very right about cook books! As I read your post it all came to me too... old cook books just waiting like soldiers to be called for duty, lol...I too have a very old Betty Crocker's 1975 cook book for which I just pull out and make the best Carrot Cake ever! I too go to internet for whatever knew I want to see, isn't it awful?! I personally collect and love REAL cook books.
So glad you found a newer Betty as lil'doggies are terrible sometimes. Great post!
    Happy weekend.

  5. I didn't have that cookbook. The Joy or Cooking was my go to one for the basics. Enjoy your friends tonight. Nothing like old friends.

  6. I have a Betty Crocker cookbook too! I don't know that I've ever even made anything out of it but I've always had it on my shelf. The pie looks out of this world! Love how you put things into such a few words that evoke such emotion. Makes me want to go call up an old friend!

  7. I think my next blog post will just direct my readers over to your blog. I could have written it myself. While our second beloved dog didn't eat part of a cookbook, he did eat a $20 bill that I left on the table. It would have purchased at least enough food for a good dinner.
I have shelf after shelf of cookbooks but find myself turning to the internet and my favorite blogs for recipes. I think I'm going to curl up with a few good cookbooks and let them know I still care.

    Have a delicious weekend!

    Best,
    Bonnie

  8. Yup, I have that one and my mother's, too. The pie pages are ripped out and stuck back in the best they'll go. Your apple pie looks great and I know just how delicious it is, too. I was just thinking about this the other day. So many of the recipes from the web have been a disappointment. I've taken notes and written the dates we tried them. I should go through and cull them...space being the premium that it is. Enjoy your supper with friends!

  12. I think Betty Crocker holds a place in most kitchens whether by sitting on the bookshelf or providing tasty recipes. Your pie looks yummy and the perfect treat to share with friends.

  14. Mmmm, that pie sure looks good. I enjoyed perusing your cookbooks too...The Nantucket Table looks interesting to me.

I pull out my old Betty Crocker for baking powder biscuits and for white sauce...two very simple things, but I never remember the proportions correctly without her.

  15. Came over from Bonnie's blog- Your post makes me want to re-visit my cookbooks and make them feel loved. My go-to cookbook when I first got married was The Joy of Cooking. It's in two pieces now, but I just can't bring myself to throw it away! :)

  16. Dotsie,

My favorite one was the McCall's cookbook that I received as a shower present. It is truly worn but I still have it (along with a gazillion others).

I think the cooking shows and the internet have influenced my cookbook collecting. However, if Ina Garten writes another one I will definitely buy it!

  17. I told Bonnie on her blog before I clicked over to see your post that I have a bad addiction to cookbooks. I've even been buying second copies of some of my favorites so I don't have to tote them between homes. My husband usually says, "You're taking all of those books?" Guess I've got it bad huh?

  18. Hi Podso, I just came over from Bonnie's blog "From a writers kitchen" to say hello! I'v been reading through some of your posts and I was very touched about the post you did on your parents, it was just lovely.

I love my cookbooks, I tend to read them like novels, luckily for them, or I think I'd be browsing the internet for recipes. I'm trying to squeeze a second bookcase in my kitchen for some recent additions!

I was happy to stop by today, I'm now your newest follower. Please stop by when you have a moment, I love company and new friends are always welcome!

  19. I received that same cookbook in 1974... and still use it for a few standbyes... it was my 'teacher' for years!!

I do know what you mean about how easy it is to try recipes from blogs and on the computer... but, every once in a while, nothing does but to sit with a good cup of coffee and a well worn recipe book. ;)

Sure do envy those friends of yours. blessings ~ tanna

  20. Podso,
Thanks for the tip with those HUGE speakers on the Entertainment Center...I'll have "Mr. Ed" give me a hand and we'll give it a try! Always helps to get another's perspective on the subject!

  21. I hope you had a wonderful time with your friends. We all need friends like that.
I loved seeing your collection of cookbooks. I am like you, I have so many, but I go to the internet or a friends so often now...what would my mother have thought of that!?

  22. I started my marriage with Betty Cr ocker and Better Homes and Gardens cookbooks -- they are such treasures for all around great recipes! I still have them both and refer to them often. Of course there are dozens of other cookbooks now on my shelf as I have a weakness for them, but the oldest are always the best loved :)
Hope you had a nice time with your friends!

  23. When there's homemade apple pie on the menu, you already have a successful evening. Yummo! I have my mom's cookbooks, but don't use them at all. All the recipes I try lately come from other blogs. Have a great week. Tammy

  24. So true. The old ones are the most dear and I still use them.

  25. So true about cookbooks, but every once in a while, I'll remember a recipe and pull the neglected volume from the shelf and give it life again. Just did that in my current post. I came over from Bonnie and am enjoying your blog. Your parents'story touched me. Went through the same thing with mine.

  26. I know just what you mean! Betty Crocker is still my most trusted resource. Tried and true. When my daughter had a parakeet...years ago, she taught her to say 'betty crocker'. What fun! I have to admit...I love to collect and read cookbooks...but am not a Julia Child by any stretch of the imagination. Mostly I do 'Plain Jane' cooking. I love to bake but it goes straight to the hips here...so try not to bake often. But I am gearing up to try 'Pickled Winter Veggies' this week. So far! Hope your day is relaxing....

  27. With all the cookbooks that I have (I have a bookcase full) I don't have a BC one. Well I'll have to remedy that with all the recommendations here.

Hope that you enjoyed that gorgeous pie!
