when it's warm

We used to grab a fan.
Mostly all beautiful, they really are pieces of art.
And were good for flirting.
I wish I knew more about these old fans,
seen in the John & Mable Ringling Art Museum in Sarasota, Forida.
But I do know it sure is warm enough here to use one today.

Linking to Mosaic Monday.

  1. Beautiful works of art, Dotsie. Displayed so lovely. The geisha's are just amazing all lined up next to each other. ♥

  2. They really are beautiful...so much detail in each one. It has been above normal in temps lately but it's been nice to get out. We went to an Art Show yesterday. Enjoy your week! Hugs, Diane

  3. The fans are beautiful. I remember the solid fans my grandmother always had for us during Mississippi summers. Churches always had them, too.

  4. Oh my goodness Dotsie, these fans are exquisite!!! I had forgotten how pretty they can be. It just occurred to me that I'd like to have a few of those for my home. I'm always collecting things, but that's one thing I don't have is a decorative fan. Beautiful fans and thanks for sharing. :)

    Hugs,

    Denise

  5. I agree, works of art. Are you really that warm? I'm a little envious though I know our hot days will arrive in July and we will be complaining!

  6. Those are lovely! We used to make our own fans at school on very warm days, but our science teacher prevented us from using them. He said that we expended more energy and created more heat by fanning ourselves. Gheesh. He was no fun!

  7. What beautiful fans! It's too bad that fans have gone out of style - they can provide a bit of relief on really hot days. One sees people using bulletins or other bits of paper instead of these pretty things.

  8. Hello, the fans are pieces of artwork. Just lovely. I wish I could feel the warmth today, it is chilly and rainy here. Happy Monday, enjoy your new week!

  9. I remember when we used to have fold out fans in the church pews with the hymnals, when we had no air conditioning. They were usually stamped with the logo of a local funeral home. Ha!

  10. Oh, those fans are really beautiful!
I have some souvenir ones and use them if the weather is hot (very seldom here in Finland), but not knowing the secret language of the hand fan, I wouldn't use them in Southern Europe... :)

  11. I think a fan is a lovely accessory, and I have a couple of friends who use them in the summer. When I was a little girl I received a fan from Venice from my parents - still have it. They are such works of art. Perhaps we should start a movement to bring them back!

  12. Those fans are so much more appealing that the current trend to use bulky ones with advertisements on them. Not too conducive to flirting ;).

  13. It's anything but warm here in Normandy. But you know I can understand that 87 degrees in uncomfortable too. Oh, for a happy medium! Such lovely fans! Wishing you well!

  14. Dotsie, Those are very fine fans. Nice colors, great texture and elegant looking. It's not that warm here. Thanks for sharing. Sylvia D.

  15. They are beautiful fans! I have a very old one from a shipping line written in French on the back of it. I have tried to find out more about it to no avail. I use a flat Japanese one on really hot days (we don't get too many of them). I guess electric fans and air conditioning have taken away the glamour of a hand held fan.

  16. Today, I'd hate to have to rely on a hand held fan to keep me cool, but I remember doing just that back in the day! The ones you have shared are works of art.

The girls had a couple of fans in their "dress up" box and had great fun with them. :)

  17. It really has been nearly like summer, hasn't it? And you are even warmer than I am here. I have always loved these fold-up fans. My mom always kept one in her purse and I would always get it out and play with it...I think it had Bible scenes on it. The ones in your mosaics are so beautiful and I love the way you arranged the photos :)

  18. Aren't these gorgeous with all the artwork on them? I have a plain white and a black one from a lingerie store of all places but they were in the wedding section so are nice looking. They have been used on several outings, especially when there is no AC.

  20. Until I read this, I had long forgotten that my mother used to have quite a few fans. I wonder where they are now.

  21. Those are exquisite!
    Little works of art really.
If fans could talk, imagine the stories they could tell!
I would love to see these in person.
