small changes

Since we moved into our house 17 years ago (it seems more like a year ago)
the "family" room has been difficult. It's more of a hallway
than a room to sit in, and while we have figured out how
to arrange things, the lighting never felt right.
It was like a "burr in my saddle" type feeling.
I finally had the idea to switch two lamps to new places.
And I wonder why it took me so long to figure it out.
Such a small change, but a whole new world of coziness.
And the saddle burr is gone.
I try to do one small change each day.
Even if it's organizing a single drawer
or cleaning out one file …
Doing so gives me a definite sense of improving things,
and that's a good feeling.

  1. Funny how something so small can make such a difference. I need to do more of that around here. You inspire me! And btw, I love the cheery springfulness of your header! :-)

  2. Podso,
Let all the light into each and every room you and I can, especially at our time in our lives.
I do believe the reason I haven't "found" a coffee table for the upper level Living Room
is because at this time in our lives it could truly, become a hazard!
Love the idea of making one small change each day!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  3. What a cutie pie below with the sticky fingers!

I know the saddle burr feeling. I am trying to recognize it and do something about whatever is frying my franny. Not as easy as it sounds.

Good idea to do something every day that creates positive change. Perhaps I need to sort my bowls' cupboard.

  4. I've lived in my house almost 35 years now. I feel as though I've looked at all the possibilities out there to arrange things with what I have. So I usually move things about with the seasons just to give me a view out a different window.

  5. Dotsie, small changes do make such a difference. I'm working on sorting through my clothes that I never wear, nor would anyone else! ♥

  6. Little changes do make a big difference. We expanded our driveway a couple of years ago and Tim will frequently say, as we drive in, "I can't believe it took so long to think of it."

  8. I never finished "tweaking" our former home of over twenty-five years so you can imagine what's going on in our new place!!

    Best,

  9. A room is all about lighting I feel - more especially as we get older!
This looks so comfortable - love that lamp!

  10. I have lived here almost 15 years and it has taken me almost that long to figure the best placement of some furniture!
I like that you do one small change per day...I think that is a good thing, as Martha Stewart would say!
    Enjoy the weekend!

  11. Good for you, Dot! That's an awesome way of living - not too overwhelming, but slowly and surely things get better doing so. Love that you are 'without burr" at the moment! Sorry I have been gone. Glad to be semi-back! Hugs!

  12. We have been in our house for over 18 years and just a few months ago we had a gate/fence installed between our house and garage. We can't believe the privacy it provides and we wonder why we never thought of it.

It seems like all of a sudden we look at something and say, "what if we try this".

    Enjoy your family room now.

  13. After nearly 4 years back in England I'm still re-arranging rooms. Lighting is important and a new lamp that I recently bought has made a big difference.

  14. I have been downsizing for a year...It seems it takes forever for get a room the way I want it, without investing in any new furniture or knickknacks. And then, like you said, one day it all comes together. Thank you and have a grand weekend!

  16. I'm envious of your plan to tidy/reorganize one thing a day for I've let things go and am now engaged in a major house purge. After it's done though, you idea will come to mind so it won't get out of hand again. Luckily our youngest daughter has a natural ability for design ideas and when I'm stuck, I call her.

  17. It is amazing how moving a piece of furniture or something else can give a whole new perspective to one's surroundings. A brilliant discovery! I was arranging and sorting through drawers in January then forgot to finish that task. I have way too much stuff. Have a wonderful weekend.

  18. You're right that making one small change can make a BIG difference in a room, and I do wonder why it often takes us so long to figure out or "see" what the solution is. So glad your saddle burr is gone. ;) I think lighting is a huge deal in a home, and I do love lamplight. Our lamps are almost as important as our furniture here because our house tends to be kind of dark. Good for you for organizing on a regular basis; that saves a lot of frustration and clutter down the road. We'll be in this house 20 years this July, and we're trying to organize everything; it always feels good to see the progress.

I hope you have a great week and enjoy this lovely spring weather, Dotsie!

    Hugs,

    Denise

  19. I agree sometimes it's the simplest of things that can make a difference. I have those ah-ha moments many times too. Our home has some oddness of it's own as well. I guess that is the uniqueness in it all. I hope you have a very blessed day!

  20. I do like that idea, Dotsie...sometimes it overwhelms me when I need to change things up because I usually want to do the whole room and then I get frustrated and nothing gets done! I may have to try your idea. I agree with you that sometimes even the smallest change can make the biggest difference!
