The Gardener and I decided to spend Saturday looking for color. The leaves
here have barely started to change so we headed for the mountains. It was cool and blustery
with a variety of "color" depending on the kind of trees and the elevation.
(We do wish we had more maples here for their bright red hues.)
We never tire of seeing the gracefully winding roads
and the layers of the mountain range, always blue,
and always smokey––thus the names Blue Ridge and Smokey Mountains.
The sky played games the whole time.
From bright blue and sunny to dark and menacing blended with odd sunlight.
No rain, but dropping temperatures and lots of wind.
When we got to 6000 feet, we were in the clouds and the trees
had shed their leaves and there was no view at all.
But it didn't take long to get down to sunshine and color again.
What a great day!

Oh, Podso how glorious - what a wonderful little day trip for you both....mountains are gorgeous, and still very novel to me, a Great Lakes Flat World Girl : - )
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing - sending you all my ruby red maples via the net. Hugs.
Any day in those beautiful mountains is a great day! We have a lot of color around here but not a mountain (hardly even a slight incline) to be seen.
ReplyDeleteBest,
Bonnie
I know you miss the maples but the greens and golds in the second photo are breath taking. How I'd love to go for a day's drive in the mountains - I always look forward to them when we travel to Florida.
ReplyDeleteThank you for linking to Mosaic Monday.
How glorious to have the Smokey Mountains to take weekend drives in! I love all your scenes, but especially the winding roads with their colorful trees standing watch.
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty drive, the Blueridge Pky and Smokey Mtns are gorgeous.. The colors and your photos are lovely..Thanks for sharing, have a happy new week!
ReplyDeleteoh... I do love the Smoky Mountains. Your pictures are wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI did not realize the Blue Ridge got so high! Up our way the highest point along Skyline Drive is 3680 feet. I don't think I've ever gotten a clear picture even from there--always the blue haze. Your photos are gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. I love the roads and rolling hills, beautiful color and the fence! Magic!
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful fall color in your part of the country. Well worth the drive, isn't it. I do like the reflection on the lake water. Very pretty.
ReplyDeleteSo much beauty in one little spot. The Fall colours are amazing and the countryside well worth taking the drive. All these temperature changes in such a short time.
ReplyDeleteSometimes my fingers get to flying so fast, that I will type a comment, and then, poof, it is gone. Such as just now. So I am recapping when I say, such a lovely world we live in. We don't have a true Fall like you. But there is beauty everywhere if you look. Your area is so pretty. I wish we could have 6 months of Fall, don't you?

Beautiful photos of some lovely sights...I love days like that..just driving and enjoying ea other and the pretty scenery.
ReplyDeleteSuch awesome scenery Dotsie.
ReplyDeleteI think there is something so special about being up in the mountains - it's inspiring!
Wonderful colours as the trees are turning.
Enjoy your Autumn while it lasts!
What a beautiful drive! Makes me want to hitch a ride! Gorgeous photos, Dotsie!
ReplyDeleteOh what a lot of beautiful color. (Once in a rare while, the maples in my views turn red, usually they are yellow. I like them best when they are both colors on the same leaf.)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful shots...thanks for taking us along for the ride! :)
ReplyDeleteI think I love the foliage against a clear blue sky, then it might be cloudy and dark and a gold tree against that is lovely as well, etc. I just marvel every fall at the beauty!
Oh beautiful country. Nice that you got a chance to get away and go up to a higher elevation. Here in Vancouver we don;t have those sugar maples which turn bright red either, but in town, some of the boulevard trees are turning red and it's lovely. I love the last image. It looks like a watercolour painting. :D
ReplyDeleteOh wow...you probably know this is my kind of country...what beautiful shots! We have very little pretty color here...not sure we will get much as the leaves are drying up and falling off. Since we no longer have our cabin, we have to make an effort to get to the mountains to hopefully see some color.... before it's too late!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful drive you shared with your husband. Beautiful autumn shots of your corner of the globe. The sky does change a lot at this time of year - from sunny to cloudy in such a short time.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful ride... Perfect way to spend an Autumn day.
ReplyDeleteThanks for taking us along.
Happy count-down to Halloween!

Beautiful photos. We are planning to head up to the mountains this weekend. I hope there is some color left. Some of the most colorful maples I see every year are in the Walmart parking lot and on 51 between Monroe and Sam Newell!
ReplyDeleteLovely! My favorite kind of day.

ReplyDeleteI missed the leaves in our mountains this year as they are gone now...but oh yours are just spectacular...bright stunning colors all mixed together by nature.
ReplyDeleteWow, those are really beautiful photos! The mountains are amazing with their smoky blues and the colours of the trees. Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear the colors are still coming on! I head to VA next week and hope to see some beautiful color as well as precious family!

Good morning, I am finally making the rounds ;) It looks like a beautiful drive you and the Gardner took. Our leaves are already falling heavy and without much colour change. By 2 weeks from now, all shall be just about bare~
