I love a quote from In His Everlasting Arms by Gail MacDonald: "Someone wisely said that a contented person is one who enjoys the scenery along the detour." Well said and certainly the life attitude I desire to live. I remember a busy time in my life when such detours would stress me. Delays I think of include long gas lines, traffic jams, an unending wait at the doctor's or anything else that does not fit into my scheme of how things should be. I remind myself to look at those delays as a gift of time. I try to have a small book along to read (which could be on my phone) or I spend the time working on my calendar, or thinking, or people watching, or praying.... And when I stop stressing about it, the wait transforms into an unexpected blessing. I can even feel a little disappointment when the wait is over.

What a great and refreshing way to look at detours. You are one wise woman.
ReplyDeleteA nice quote with words of wisdom that you are obviously living by.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful and wise quote and a good rule of thumb. Thanks - I needed that!
ReplyDeleteHope you are well. God bless.

Well said. Many times we have had to take detours on the roads, and find the most interesting items to take pictures of for blogs! Life is also full of detours, and many turn out for the best.
ReplyDeleteSuch wise words here. I find that "detours" don't stress me as much as when I was younger. Maybe because I've FINALLY learned, that MUCH of life is detours.
ReplyDeleteI recently read a quote about the difference between an ordeal and an adventure is attitude.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter called in a panic a few weeks ago. She and her boyfriend were north of San Francisco heading for an oyster fest in Bodega Bay. They missed the turn, whipped a U-turn and ended up it a ditch. Their cell phones did not work in the area . . . the list of mishaps just grows. When she finally was able to contact me to get Auto Club out to help them, I told her the quote. She told her boyfriend and they decided to laugh about it instead of moan.
Yes, go with the flow ... sure eases the angst. Best wishes and blessings, Tammy
ReplyDeleteI am a classic Type A person! I don't do waiting well!! My friend Jae says that there should be a special line at the movie theaters snack stand for Type A people like me! I thought that was so funny! More often than not, I want to dive across the counter and get it myself!!!!
ReplyDeleteI would like to think that I am mellowing somewhat as I age. I hope so!!!

Very wise!

Same, with any place, where our desire to "do-this-right-now", is thwarted.
ReplyDeleteLines in the grocery store, etc.
So much wiser to relax, rather than tense-ourselves, into a tizzzzy.
Thank you for the wise reminder.
Happy October,

Wise words. I'm finding it easier to apply this concept now than I did when I was much younger. Wish I'd learned it sooner.
ReplyDeleteI agree and if the detour or delay is to sit in traffic I enjoy people watching or the view around me. We need to relax more. :)
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! But it doesn't hurt to be reminded from time to time.
ReplyDeleteBeautifully written...and a wise way to live.
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautifully written piece.
ReplyDeleteThese 'slow down' moments are most necessary in today's world.
It seems society as a whole is geared towards "fast" everything.
Since returning to work after a four year break - time is of the essence now.
The business catch phrase is "speed of response".
Taking the time to consider and evaluate seems to have flown out the window.
I've realised this is no longer my world and only the means to an end, which is funding trips to see my family!
