a slow goodbye

Summer is waning. The signs are subtle, but there. The heat is still intense, but a bit less so, and--it's hard to describe--but a sort of tired heat.
Or maybe it's just that I am tired of the heat!
The sun has a different slant in the sky; the mornings are cooler and darker. And leaves are falling ever so sparsely--the early birds.
It's like they are saying, "we're done, we're outa here."
Just enough to want to sweep them off the patio.
Down here in the south we'll be raking our leaves well into December.

As hard as it is to say goodbye to summer--a busy and fun one it's been--the time has come, and we can't hold on.
Activities let go for the summer are starting up again. There's no stopping the clock.
Meanwhile, the summer flowers are more brilliant than ever, reveling in the slight change in temperature.
It's like the want to show off, hoping they can hang on to life a bit more.
And so they will, til the hard frost comes.
And we'll enjoy them!

  1. The shadows are growing longer here. It was 50 degrees this morning. I'm happy that I live in a place that has seasons. It's so nice to appreciate each one. Hmmm, remind me of that statement when the snow blows around here!

Impatiens were one of my mother's favorite flowers. She had mounds of them all around the house--in the ground and in baskets. Your photos remind me of her this morning. Thanks!

    Best,
    Bonnie

  2. I loved how you described the going away of summer, but the flowers are still so beautiful. You don't have such hard winters in the south, do you? According to what you say, it's going to be warm for a good while yet! Lovely though. Lots of hugs, FABBY

  3. Wonderful post...I feel the same way about fall approaching. Everything is just so quiet and even the flowers look a little tired. We are in the 60's so it really feels like summer is over, having to dig out some sweatshirts and jeans! In any event, I'm hanging on to summer. I'm not one to rush things!!

    Have a good week!

    XO,

  4. I am a summer kind of girl. I do not do as well in the winter and I hate to be cold. Your photos are so pretty.

  5. We went from 100° to 70° in a day's time...it has been wonderful. The leaves are falling here but I think it is from the long, hot, dry summer we have had.

  7. I can't believe how beautiful my flowers are right now. Almost the best of the summer season. There are a few trees changing colour but one can mostly see the subtle fading of the greens. The temperature is going down to 8 Celsius tonight, about 48 F. Brrr. It will be chilly for sure. Warm hugs, Pamela

  8. Podso,
Your post reminded me of something my MoMa told me when my Grandmother passed away. Our lives, (in the end) are much like the lilies of the field. They bloom and are the most beautiful, just before they fade away.My Grandmother set and held my 9 week old son until her arms were heavy and aching the night before she died. She only passed him off to my MoMa when she feared she would drop him.Your flowers bloom the most radiant before their final days! Lovely!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  9. Hi Podso
Sad yes, that summer has come to an end but a new beginning with autumn.
Be thankful you are raking leaves in December, we'll likely be shovelling snow by then. :-)

  13. Great post! Living in the south does have its perks! We don't have to fight the cold temps which I hate. The flowers start to thrive and the somewhat cooler weather is enjoyable, for a little while anyways. Enjoyed your pretty photos!

Yes, we're having crisp mornings now, here in southern New Jersey. I love that I have to wear a sweater to school in the morning! Today I'm off and catching up on some blog reading, devotions, and finishing my fall home decor! Love this time of year - with a cuppa tea later, too!
    Joy!

  15. Your flowers are still looking gorgeous! My window boxes have impatients but are looking tired. I looked for pansies to replace them for the fall but they are not available yet.

  16. Hi, I enjoyed your post very much. You have a nice way with words. I live in the south and my flowers looked so awful that I took them out of their misery a few weeks ago. Your impatiens look very pretty and health. Have a great weekend. Shannon

  17. I'm really looking forward to it. It's getting dark earlier and earlier and I'm loving it.

Love the impatiens in the barrels.

  18. It was cool and rainy here this morning but by mid day it was hot again! I'm sure in a couple of weeks we'll start feeling more autumn weather.

PS: I never visited Casa Bonita! Thansk for telling me about it. I'm going to put it on my list of things I want to do in Denver next time I visit!
