1. The sound of a lawn mower. Why? I've pondered that. Could it be knowing
there will be a tidy lawn when the noise stops?
2. The sound of tires on gravel. Why? Life is happening. Either
I or someone else is coming or going.
And, half the time it includes anticipation.
And, half the time it includes anticipation.
3. When waking in the house of a friend, or a bed and breakfast,
the distant sound of clinking dishes (enhanced by the scent of coffee.)
Why? Someone else, not me, is preparing breakfast.
4. The night sound of crickets.
Why? This takes me back to my childhood when we slept with our windows open
during summer nights. We would sleep with our head at the foot of the
bed--apparently it was cooler that way--and the sound of crickets
filled the night air.
5. The hum, singing or chatter of a child deeply content at play.
Why? It's a good clue all is well.
When I mowed the lawn this morning I thought about sounds
of comfort. There's more than five I can think of.
How about you?
Lovely post. I have to admit that one of my favourite sounds is that of waves crashing softly against the shore. There is just something magical about it. I lay on the beach, close my eyes and just soak in the atmosphere. Beautiful. Sounds are so inspirational.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend
I love this post! All sounds of comfort. I'd add bird song and my cats purring. As I go through my day, I'm going to add to your wonderful list. You've got me thinking (a good thing).
ReplyDeleteI love your list too and agree! Also the sound of the coffee pot gurgling! And right now we have a little fan on the floor bringing in cooler air from the main part of the house. The whir of the fan sounds wonderful...and can put you to sleep! Enjoy your weekend! Hugs!
ReplyDeleteYour list made me smile and nod all the way through. Those little voices engrossed in play are the sweetest. Now you have me thinking about the sounds in my life - like the front door opening to signal someone I love is coming into the house.
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend, Dotsie!
What a fun post. I would say the sound of our new fish tank is very restful and comforting. I love the sound of typing. Maybe because of the productivity or the relaxation of blogging... not sure.. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteWater lapping at the shore or trickling down a rock-strewn stream....Except for the lawn mower all your sounds of comfort remind me of my Mamaw's and Papaw's farm which was a wonderful, stabilizing place in my childhood.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all five. And I had forgotten about sleeping at the foot of the bed.
ReplyDeleteA lovely post, for me the most beautiful sound in the world has to be children's laughter, there is no sound like it.
ReplyDeleteOh what a dear and precious post...most unique! I agree with all five, but want to hear more from your viewpoint.
ReplyDeleteI do like your sounds. Not sure about the sounds of lawnmowers, but I do like the smell of new cut grass.
ReplyDeleteOH you've got 5 GOOD ones, including 2 of my very favorites...lawn mowers and crickets. I'd add on waves crashing at the beach, the sound of sprinklers, and wind chimes blowing in a light breeze. This was fun...
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your week-end!
I spent $30 last year for an insecticide to get rid of the crickets who were driving me crazy. You've given me a whole new perspective (plus saving me $30) this year.
ReplyDeleteYour favorite sounds are among mine, too. In Spring the froggy chorus from our ponds is amazing, and there is a week in Summer when the wild cherries on our massive wild cherry tree are at their peak, that birds produce a tremendous amount of celebratory chirping in between gulping down cherries.
ReplyDeleteSounds wonderful :-)
ReplyDeleteReally clever post. I agree with your comforting sounds, and I like the sound of my daughter's voice as she calls and talks to me on her way home from work.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, many sounds of comfort the same as yours. During the dog days of summer I like the cicadas in the afternoons and the crickets at night. We get fireflies all the time and although there's no sound from them, they, and the still of the night bring me much joy.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the five different sounds! So lovely!! I am sorry to be so late visiting, we had a minor domestic drama yesterday - nothing serious in the end, all ok - but I didn't get a change to do any blogging. Thank you so much for taking part in Five On Friday, I do appreciate it! Hope you are having a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteLovely! I do enjoy hearing the sound of a lawnmower and that smell of freshly mown grass. And hearing a child at play, singing or telling their own little story is so sweet.
