home…again

 (my grandmother's house)
Each house I pass by is a piece of art for me. I grew up being a house
person--our whole family seemed to love houses maybe because
both my grandfathers had businesses involving houses.
My favorite place in the whole world is home, but I know not all houses
are homes, and not all homes are the havens that my home was growing up.
It's a blessing I don't take for granted.
I've written a lot about home on this blog and here I go again!
I place a high value on comfort and peace in our surroundings.
Where we live there is a lot of pressure to "update" our homes both
outside and inside, furniture, bathrooms, kitchens, etc.
Sometimes it's tempting, but I prefer the old heirlooms,
the stuff that tells me stories, has character,
and promotes cozy.
I love the descriptions of a home in E. Goudge's Pilgrim's Inn.
I could read it again and again.
"There did not seem to be a straight line anywhere, and yet the old place
gave no impression of decay. …The room was gracious, lived-in,
warm, glowing, and altogether glorious….
Standing there in the sunlight and firelight, George and the children felt as
though they had come home. They looked at each other, but could not speak."

  1. Dotsie, I finished Pilgrim's Inn last week and loved it! I'm getting ready to go to the library to pick up the omnibus that contains all 3 books about the Eliots. I'm also stopping along the way to look at a used book sale to see if I can find any of her books for my bookshelf. Thank you for mentioning this book and this author. She's a real treasure. I've been going through albums to glean early photos of our home so I can made a scrapbook showing it's history. The last owner gave us photos from the first owner. There's been quite a transformation over it's 73 years.

  2. Oh Dotsie...what a beautiful post. Your grandmother's sweet home looks so very inviting...in fact, I can almost smell the cookies baking in the oven! Like you, I do enjoy the old way of things...you won't find any contemporary furnishings at my house either. What a wonderful collection of old books you have! I hope you are enjoying your Thursday :)

  3. I do agree, heirlooms hold memories and tales of our past. We should always treasure them.

  4. Okay, that's it! I'm bringing my copy of Pilgrim's Inn to my reading table for a reread. Funny about that pressure...do you find it here in Blogdom, too, or are there enough likeminded souls to allay that? Your home always looks beautiful to me and lovingly photographed. This post was an ahhhh for me.

  5. I'm with you Dotsie. Our house is our haven and has had all the updates but my decor is cozy and vintage and that's the way I like it. No modern for me! Your grandmother's house is so pretty. I wondered if the front part was once an open veranda.

  6. Oh, I love that excerpt from the book! I too like our home to be a place of peace and comfort. And I loved trying to read all the spines of your books! It's a habit I've got. LOL

  7. I haven't read Pilgrim's Inn but find the quote heart warming. As a young bride our home was always spotless and shiny, visitors were afraid to mess things up. With time I've relaxed and don't worry about dust bunnies appearing while a friend is here for tea, the loved and lived in look is more important to me now. And, furniture or the wooden floor that gets marked has character, something that needs time to evolve.
I too was reading the titles of your books. :-)

  8. I was telling the girls today I wish we had a family home/farm that had passed down for generations, but we don't. Sure would be sweet, though, wouldn't it? :) You, btw, are the ultimate homey girl. <3

  11. We are going to be moving into a new house, but when I move my stuff in, it will be immediately home for me.

  12. Your love for home totally resonates with me. Creating a place of welcome and love and peace provides a bit of a sanctuary here on earth...just a small shadow of our home-to-be. Thank you for this warm and welcoming post. I love your glimpses.

  14. Oh yes, that home Elizabeth Goudge describes - that has always been my idea of a wonderful, welcoming, safe and accepting home and I really wish it existed! I suppose something like that does exist for many blessed people in this world. I certainly hope so. And for others, it exists in our hearts and we can go there whenever we need to. And of course our true home is Christ who encompasses all those things a house with four walls like Pilgrim's Inn can give us and much, much more. All your beautiful old books add warmth and the blessing of goodness and decency and love in the stories they carry between their covers. Old heirlooms are real treasures. I'm glad you have some to appreciate. ;-)

  15. I love houses and especially 'homes.' I have worked by whole adult life making a home for our family. We delight in it, and love it being cozy and warm and welcoming.

I've not read Pilgrim Inn, but now of course I am going to have to!

I love your grandmother's home. Very sweet.

  16. I seem to be surrounded by neighbours putting in new kitchens and bathrooms this week but I love having things just the way they are and a bit quirky. Recently someone came round and said my house was a home and so comfortable compared to the sterile 'same' environment of others - I took this as a real compliment. Home is where the family is and love, not a place to keep up with the neighbours :-) Have a wonderful weekend enjoying your wonderful surroundings xx

  17. Your grandmother's house is so charming and homey, Dotsie!! I've always wondered about this house when I see it on your sidebar; now that mystery is solved. :) I know what you mean about loving houses -- my mom and I are the very same way, and she has always had the touch for making a house a home. I often find houses every bit as fascinating as people -- hope that doesn't sound too strange. I know where you're coming from about the pressure to update; we get that from TV shows, books, magazines, and blogs. We need to do much updating here, not because we're trying to keep up with "The Jones" but because so many things are wearing out here in this 40 year-old house. We've put a lot off, but it really needs to be done. One thing at a time is the way we'll have to do it. :) I love filling a home with treasured heirlooms and collected things that tell something about who we are. I always enjoy seeing your home, Dotsie.

Hope you have a great weekend!

    Hugs,

    Denise

  18. We live in the smallest house on our lane and some people have suggested that we tear down our old house with tons of charming features to build a McMansion that takes up the entire lot. We prefer our cozy home filled with things that have meaning for us.

Oh my, we are such kindred spirits! I adore home and love seeing homes. I am with you, I love the cozy. Thank you for your sweet words and stopping by Behind the Garden Gate.
Work set me up with an email at google, and darn it, I can't seem to get off that so I am having trouble signing into blogs. Sigh.. But it is me, Gayle!

  20. Podso,
    B R A V O!!!
I am grateful everyday that our home is a reflection of whom we've become!!!
I adore that I live On Crooked Creek. . .there's nothing "straight" in this 1970's Ranch Style Home!!!
No symmetry. . .which is one of my greatest challenges with my Traditional Design Style!!!
Peace and comfort, to you and your family, dear friend!!!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  21. Dotsie, I'm with you with older vintage items have character. Thanks for sharing your grandmother's house and your home photos. I really liked the old books. Books are great. I've recently started visiting the library again and things have changed. Several books I could not find hard copies of, so I'm learning about eBooks and the digital book world. Sylvia D.
