hair story

My hair is so, so thick that I feel confident that I'll probably never start balding as some women eventually do. The only time I've messed with my hair color was in college when I combed in "Clairoxide" in the summer to add some blonde highlights. My increasingly gray highlights are natural even though I'm often asked about my color. While I've always wished my hair wasn't so very straight, its curious that at this age I'm suddenly getting cowlicks, and not in advantageous spots. I have found a hair stylist that I adore. Christie listens to what I want, does many of my friends' hair (so it's a little taste of "Mitford") and even better, her price is so cheap. Just in the past week two women have asked where I go, and I have to say that Christie is "closed." No more new customers. This girl is busy. And she can hide my cowlicks.

She loves to talk about the color of my hair. She says more and more women are coming in and asking for gray, which I find amusing, unless she's just trying to make me feel good. Are these women taking a turn to reality, or is it because gray is so popular in decorating?

So here's the story. One day Christie told me about an 80-something woman whose hair color is just like mine. She comes in weekly for a trim because her hair grows so quickly. She's an "active 80" and has beautiful white hair, but gets gray highlights because she's not ready "to go totally white." While I was getting my hair cut a sharp looking woman, looking to be in her early 70s or late 60s walked in and greeted Christie. She sat for a bit but then grabbed a broom and started sweeping the floor. Her gray highlighted hair was lovely. How amusing that this was the same 80-something woman Christie had just been telling me about. And our hair is identical. I hope I will be in as good shape in my 80s. Just from chatting with her a bit I'm guessing a lot of it has to do with her outlook on life.

And, by the way, it's quite a feat to photograph the back of one's head.

  1. You are lucky to have nice thick hair, Dotsie. Many women in my family have problems with thinning hair.
Yes, I do believe our attitude has much to do with how we age. ♥

  2. Your hair is so pretty. I have very light silver hair....except in the back. It's got streaks of darker grey. I should try to take a photo of my hair! haha! How did you do that? lol You may start a trend! Hugs, Diane

  3. Neat story - my youngest is a licensed stylist - and her expertise is color correction. I know she, too, would love your awesome locks.

I think you hit it on the head- attitude is everything.

Hey, just returned from an amazing movie for ANY age; Inside Out , the new Pixar film. I think husbands would like it too - may be too confusing for super young, but colorful and pretty anyway. I laughed, I cried and I would go back in a second to see it again. Hugs.

  4. You're blessed with beautiful, thick hair and a pretty color, and a stylist who can hide cowlicks! I have yet to find one. Fun story about the older gal with a youthful outlook on life. (I thought the reasons behind women not coloring their hair so much is because a. they're saving money and b. they're concerned about chemicals on the scalp.

  5. Lucky me, I'm just starting to get a few silver strands at the side. I've been having highlights done for a number of years but have never coloured my hair so I'm waiting to see what colour I'll become. :-) Yours is a pretty shade of silver Dotsie, what I would call an elegant colour. Good to know that white hair can have grey highlights, be bold and ask the woman if you can share her hair colour with your blogging sisters. :-)

  6. Your "gray" is quite lovely. I think all colors look better with a variety of shades of the same color. I have remarkably few gray hairs for being 64. I think it's because the gray ones are the ones falling out all the time. My mother colored her hair blond until she was 72 so I don't know when she actually turned gray.

  8. A good hair stylist is golden. And your hair color is gorgeous!! I have always been a fan of gray...that is, until I started going gray at age 35! It took me 17 years of coloring it to come to terms with my own gray hair but now I am happy with it. Love your story of the lovely lady in her young 80's! :)

  9. I have cowlicks - and curly hair. Kind of crazy!

Your hair is lovely. Tim has always told me to not worry about coloring my hair. He says, "You've earned everyone of those grey hairs!" I guess so. I've always had such dark hair that it will be interesting to see when it is all grey or white!

I need to get to my hairdresser! I must find time to call her!

  10. Ha-ha! You done good getting that head shot. :) I've always had very thick hair, too. And have always been asked about my hair color as I've gone tons of different natural highlights, plus now all the gray that is coming in. I've never colored my hair, only put on glazes and rinses as I've never wanted the upkeep. I don't understand why so many want to fight aging. It's going to happen. And it truly is our outlook and activity that determines how we age. Not our hair color. I want to be like that when I'm 80, too. The friend that used to do my hair went back to the States. She had been in the business forever and knew my hair. One side is curly, one side is straight and I have a cowlick. She knew just what to do to make it all work together. She always said she loved playing with my hair. Sometimes I'd have to make her stop as she kept cutting and fluffing and trimming and messing. Ha! Now I have someone who is fairly new to the business and she still doesn't KNOW hair. But she does it from her home and that's more comfortable to me than going to a salon here. One day she'll get it. I hope. :)

  11. My hair has been gray for so long I can't remember how auburn my hair had been. But as long as my hair is gray I can sure wear more vibrant colors...I do enjoy that!!! Such a grand post!

  12. You do have beautiful thick hair Dotsie. I love the colour and the style. I'm afraid I'm one of those who has thinning hair and it's getting very white on the top and sides while the back is still salt and pepper. I don't know what to do to make it thicker and am glad for my hairdresser who can cut it to cover those thinning spots. I certainly come by it honestly as it runs in the family - both the white and the thinning. I've thought about getting highlights too but dread having to do the touch ups every 4 weeks plus I don't go to a 'cheap' hairdresser. Now grey highlights might be an option and not as noticeable. My hairdresser also raves about my hair and tells me - "Don't you ever think about colouring it!!". Thanks for sharing this topic today. A lot of my friends have also gone the grey route but I've seen young 20's who have died their hair grey too. Great photo, by the way! :)

  14. Great job of the back-of-the-head photograph! I have thick hair, too, and I color it. I wasn't ready to go gray at 46. I do it myself and while it takes a bit of time, it's not that bad. My hair has always been very dark and I can't imagine how I'm going to look when gray - which I'll do someday.
Funny how our hair changes over time - texture, amount, color, and behavior!

  15. Your thick hair is lovely - and what a feat of photography to get that shot! I am going grey - more slowly than my younger sisters, but is is happening. I rather like it. I am however experiencing some thinning and I don't like that!
I have sent you an email - hope to hear from you!

  16. What a lovely head of hair you have and yes, gray is the new in colour, even for younger people. I am nearly end of 6 decades and I have only enough gray to count on fingers and toes. My hair is thin and flyaway and I have always had highlights, since I was 16, but none now since last August. My wonderful stylist is missing me, but for her to cut and wash my hair is $43,00 plus a tip and I have found a place nearer home that will do it for 1/3 that and does a great job too. Maybe when mine goes gray I will have a little body, that is what I have heard anyway~

  18. Your hair is great!
Mine is baby fine and coloring helped with volume but when I turned sixty I stopped. I now say I am wearing my wisdom. Proverbs 16:31

  19. Your hair is beautiful, Dot! My hair is half grey but I still color it. I think when I turn 70 I'll let it go natural--I just don't feel ready as yet.
