on providing

I've been using my iPad to read the first book in the Narnia series to my granddaughter. We began just to satisfy her curiosity, and then she got hooked. How I loved reading the series to her dad and his brother, and now I'm enjoying sharing it with her. The first day we read I found something on line. I'm not sure how these copies are done, but sometimes a letter is left off a word, etc. We're never sure we'll find it the next time we read so I decided to reserve a copy from our library. I went online and found only two in our large city library system. I tried to reserve a copy but it looked like someone already had so I knew I wouldn't get the book soon.

I was telling the Gardener my surprise at the lack of Narnia in our city library and how I had tried to reserve it. It was the plan for me to go over to their house to read and babysit after lunch. As I headed out the door my phone beeped with a message -- from the library -- my reserved book was ready. Had I actually reserved it? Who knew! Then followed another beep and a message from DIL--could I come 15 minutes later? That would give me just the time I needed to stop by the library.

It was an old copy with the same sweet sketches as in the one I read to my kids. I was eager to tell Little B about the provision of this book -- I call such things a "wink" or "smile" from God.  For isn't He concerned about everything in our lives? Both big and little? She took in my story, eyes a bit wide, and then her mom iced the cake.

"What was our lesson in VBS this morning, B?"

It was on "God provides for us."

Another wink.

  1. I love hearing stories like this, Dotsie. Thank you for sharing! I write down occurrences like this in my daily journal. Now I wish I'd kept them in a separate journal so I'd have easy access to them, my memory being what it has always been (short). ;-)

  2. My soul rejoices - this is my favorite kind of posts.

I cannot tell you how glad your serendipity was on this/these occasions. Love it. (And adored Narnia, may be time to read them again myself.) Thanks for the wink you just shared with us, Podso!

What a neat term. May have to borrow it! : - )

  3. What a precious God breeze! (i have actually considered purchasing a set of the Narnia books for the library, but I think that they might well disappear. That's pretty troubling actually.) So glad that your granddaughter is ready and enjoying The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe. My brands have seen the movie and were most frightened by it, which I felt was odd given all that they have seen for movies. I'm going to persevere and show it to them again this summer if they agree that they are older now. Their dad loved the books and has them all so they are available for them.

  5. Dotsie I have received those "winks" and "smiles" too, and it always amazes me and makes my heart soar. It's just more affirmation that he really does care for even the least of us. I'm so glad you shared this story with us -- our son loved the Narnia books, too. I still have all his copies here at the house. :)

    Have a lovely weekend.

    Hugs,

    Denise

  6. I love this story about God's provision by winks and smiles and love that He is in the smallest details of our lives. It's sweet that you are reading this classic book to your granddaughter and that she also recognizes those same winks. What a blessing.

  7. What can I say that hasn't already been mentioned by our friends above. A touching post, nice to know others receive the winks and smiles.
The last time I did reading with a granddaughter, she was reading the story to me. That is a good feeling when they're growing up and the tables are turned.

  8. Oh, I believe, as you do, that God directs the smallest details of the lives of His children. I love the times that He designs it exactly so that we recognize His hand. What a wonderful lesson for your granddaughter today...even better than the delicious reading! Thank you for sharing this story, Dotsie!

  9. Oh Dotsie, there is nothing better than reading to the grands. Mine still love it when I read to them and the young ones are 10 and 12 years old. Oh yes, God is interested in every detail.
Do I spy bluebells in your lovely photo? ♥

  12. I completely believe that God does care about all those little things. After all, to the God of the Universe, are there any BIG things?? And now for which book comes first in the series. I always started with Lion,Witch,Wardrobe, and at the end read The Magician's Nephew. I like it much better that way. It's like, 'Ahhhh, I see now!' which I like. :-) What a special treat to be reading this to your granddaughter!

  13. Great story!

Kyle started that book this summer. I am a buyer of the books we love because I want to own them and not worry that I might not be able to get one from the library when we need it!

I love all the God winks in this! Love the way He loves us!

  14. Your lovely post has touched my heart too Dotsie!
In fact we've had several such wink/smile moments while here with the grandies.
I will check and note down which Narnia books they have - I love all CS Lewis's writing too!
    I appreciate your comment too!
Lovely bluebells, there were still a few about in Ireland. x

  15. I think your reading to the young ones is terrific and I SO plan on doing that with mine! :)

I've only read the Lion, Witch & The Wardrobe myself ( a minimum of 6 times since I was a teen) and I once lived with my late sister and her three kids. Each night I read a bit to them while they cuddled in bed with me. They are now adults and they have said this time was the best in their memories. Yay for the written word and classics!

  19. Don't you just love it when those things happen, Dotsie? He really does want to give us the desires of our hearts, no matter how small or trivial. What a sweet blessing!

  20. There are definitely times when it is so evident that everything works out as it should and other times when it happens quietly. A friend and I were just talking about listening to our inner voice. Sometimes it's a little nagging feeling that becomes a big smack upside the head if we don't listen. But in stillness, these special moments come to us. Enjoy reading aloud. :)
