Our house could be mistaken for a library. As I thought about Mary's prompt for this week (books)
I realized we have a bookcase in every room in our house except the baths and one bedroom.
Yes we love, and I guess, collect books, and no I haven't read them all,
though I am looking for more time to read soon!
You could call the Gardener a bibliomaniac. He loves books. We especially love old books.
Of course television had been invented before I was born, but
my parents chose not to own a TV, so I grew up reading a lot--a bookworm for sure.
My parents read a lot too, and I would hide my book from my dad as he had a
habit of picking up a book and reading a few pages or chapters from the
middle of the volume, especially if I was ready to read it!

The Gardener read all these books to our boys when they were young and they loved
guessing the plots (we also did not have a TV for much of their young years).
So I suppose you might say books are important to us.

Mary at Little Red House has a weekly photo prompt; check out the other book posts.
Dotsie, you have such a collection of old books. When we read books at home they were passed on to other members of the family or friends. I wish I still had some of those books as they never made their way back to us.

Podso,
ReplyDeleteAmazing book collection,dear friend!!!
Reading was (and still is) important to me. "Mr. Ed" grew up in a family of Television viewing. My veiwing was limited in our home. Now that we are retired, I many times shut off the TV and we read in the evenings...until March Madness...then it's hopeless!
I have many places throught out our home where I can slip away and read!!!
Thank you for sharing your love of books with us!!!
Fondly,
Pat
Hi Dotsie, you certainly have a beautiful collection of old books. The covers are so lovely. They sure don't make them like that anymore. I've just read all your posts straight back to January 25th. Gosh I haven't been over here in a while. I am sorry to hear of your mother's passing, but I love the grace and gratitude with which you have accepted it. The post of your routine as you played the waiting game, taking care of your mom, was so touching. The year I turned 13 I received a tape recorder for Christmas. I taped a radio show about Elvis Presley and songs by Barbra Streisand, Olivia Newton John and Linda Ronstadt. I also taped my Uncle Ed singing Christmas songs that year -- it would be the last time we heard his voice as he had Huntington's Disease and shortly thereafter went into a nursing home where he eventually died. I still have that tape and one year was even able to copy it and send it to his daughter who had never heard it. Now I have no way to play it back and that makes me very sad. Sending hugs and blessings to you, Tammy
ReplyDeleteI see well loved books! (I knew that they'd be here.) Thank you for the book recommendation! I really like your vintage glassed in bookcase, too.
ReplyDeleteWe are book people too. I have a very hard time ever letting one leave my possession. I can usually pass on paperbacks to the library book sales but the precious hardbacks stay here at home.
ReplyDeleteBest,
Bonnie
I love your book collection. That book case with those gorgeous books inside really made me stop. I have always loved the way old books look in cabinets that you have to open. Makes them seem even more enchanting.
ReplyDeleteOpening up an old book, touching the pages, and seeing remarkable artwork is so lovely.

You books are so beautiful with their well loved covers and soft colors. I had never thought about it, but there is not a room in our house that doesn't have a pile of books lurking somewhere. Ours are not as lovely as yours, but they are appreciated, too. ;) I do love the written word. I hope yours will find a home one day with your next generations... they are such treasures, Dotsie. Legacy. blessings ~ tanna
ReplyDeleteBeautiful collection, Dotsie. We gave most of our books away when we moved to the cottage. Now we just borrow them from the library. I know several people that own Nooks, but there's something wonderful about handling real books that I hope we'll never have to give up. :)
ReplyDeleteHave a happy one,
Zuzu
I am a reader ,too. I come from a family that did not read. I lived on a large farm with five brothers and three sisters. They were the busy type and I am quiet. I don't think you can have to many books. To my joy my son is a reader.
ReplyDeleteSmiles, Dottie
You have a wonderful collection of books, and they look so good in that barrister's bookcase. Really, what a paucity of life we would have without books!
ReplyDeleteOh what a gorgeous collection of old books you have! They are so beautiful -- each with it's own lovely binding and cover.
ReplyDeleteI did not watch much TV while growing up either, but I always had my nose buried in a book. And some of my fondest memories of my children are those moments spent reading to them!
Thanks so much for contributing to Thursday's Inspiration. xoxo
Dotsi, I would love to spend time perusing your wonderful collection of books. You've got several titles that are on my bookshelves too - makes me feel very at home!
ReplyDeleteMy darling father always had a copy of 'The Imitations of Christ' on his bedside table.
My home has books in every room too!
Sending you some summer sunbeams from my corner of the world!
Shane ♥
Oh, you love books, too! What a beautiful collection and charming setting for them! =]
ReplyDeleteKaty
I love old books! That is a beautiful cabinet in the last picture.
ReplyDeleteIf I really enjoy a book I keep it for a while but usually pass them on. I was 10 when my family first got a TV so my sister and I had got the reading habit it is something that never leaves you.
ReplyDeleteMerle....
I have some antique leather bound scrapbooks from a dear, dear friend that I cherish as much as you do these!...:)JP
ReplyDeleteoh my.

What a lovely collection of old books. I can see you are a deep thinker. Valerie
ReplyDeleteYou have a beautiful collection of old books Dotsie. I love the old covers, the illustrated covers and spines and illustrations, usually line drawings, inside. I have a lot of books as well from many generations of the last century. I love a good book. Pamela

Wow I love love to read too, but pass along books after I've read them to family and friend.
ReplyDeleteLove the collection that was read to your sons.
Leann
I love books too and so does my husband. I grew up without a television and have not had one as an adult for more than a couple of years and that was ages ago. I still love to read, but I also watch old movies and vintage tv shows on-line.
ReplyDeleteI love your bookshelves, they're really beautiful.
I love old books...I mean I REALLY LOVE them! I think this cabinet is such a wonderful way to enjoy them! They are each one a treasure!
ReplyDeletewhat a wonderful collection...and to have read so many is just another treasure...I love books! Your pictures of them are also wonderful
ReplyDeleteI always see your name in the comments on Sara's blog (Come away with me) and i love the way Podso sounds! seeing this post in particular was delightful, im a lover of old books too and have almost two 6ft bookcases full! There is nothing better to me than a day spent rummaging in old secondhand book shops, followed by a mug of tea and a flick through their pages.
