on our range

I think eight makes a herd, don't you? And yesterday we had a herd of deer in our yard. The most we'd seen before was five, but they must feel quite at home as they brought some friends this time and stayed awhile. They even let me take pictures. Yes I think they look sweet, and I feel sorry for their life in such shallow woods as are in our neighborhood, but I am not crazy about the ticks they share with us and the trampling they do to our garden. Yesterday they were eating grass and azalea buds. I hate to have a "discouraging word," but I think they are feeling way too at "home on our range."
"Home, home on the range,
Where the deer and the antelope play;
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day."

  1. Goodness, what a sight! I envy those of you that have these beautiful creatures nearby, but I don't envy them feasting in your garden! Beautiful pictures though.

    Have a great week!

  2. I would have to agree Dotsie, cute guests but poor table manners. 8 sounds like a herd to me.

  3. I agree. They need a much larger range to play on. They are quite destructive and the ticks are bad news. I think they need a discouraging word don't you? :)

I love our deer. I know they can be nuisances, but I love seeing them roam around and leap and frolic. We had 11 the other day making their way from our neighbor's backyard to the homes across the street. love them deerly.:)

  5. Hahahaha - - - you clever girl you.

Sometimes if you want a lovely yard and garden it is quite necessary to say MANY a discouraging word to the deer.

  6. We see deer frequently in the field along the edge of the woods at the very back of our property. They are such beautiful creatures! I know what you're saying about the ticks though...Lyme disease reared its ugly head in our family a few years ago. Not a pretty picture.

And I do feel sorry for the deer whose habitats are so meager. I have such a soft spot for animals...

  7. Deer are pretty but I worry about drivers safety on the road that they share with the deer.
    be careful!

I know some people don't like hunting. I don't hunt and I don't like to eat deer meat but lots of people do. If I were you and hunting was allowed near my home, I would be telling hunting friends to look at hunting there.

  8. Yes, I agree. Too close. But they must be so hungry to get that close. They do make for a great photo op.

  9. And I was giddy when I saw a squirrel run across the street yesterday (after all it's the city)

What a beautiful sight; but yes, they are definitely feeling at home. Now what!?

Where's Gene Autry when we need 'em!

I hear you. I love seeing them, but I don't care for them eating our garden!
    :)

  12. I would be discouraging them, too, dear lady. I have friends who live with deer in their yard constantly in Ontario and their yard simply is not their own. All of my friends flowering bushes are behind ugly chicken wire and fencing, not pretty.

  13. Podso,
I enjoy the birds and the squirrels and l o n g every year for the return of the rabbits...but I would not welcome the deer. Very destructive...they detest marigolds!!!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  16. This is such a funny post, Podso. :) I agree they are cute, and I, too, feel sorry for them. But...they are definitely destructive and will eat all your flowers and veggies if given a chance. It's really too bad; I love bunnies, but they are very destructive too.

    Have a good day!
