True confession: I've never had a pedicure. I'm behind the times. And I'm not even sure when it all got so popular. I was given a manicure gift once, and my nails stayed pretty for about a day and a half. (Most nurses are too practical to get manicures.) I know girls go for "pedi's and mani's" as a sort of girl bonding thing, and this week my time arrived. A friend who lives in Europe, after being here a month, was heading back. Three of us decided to get pedicures before going out to to a little farewell dinner together.
I was overwhelmed by the chemical "scent" when I first entered, but soon got used to it. When the staff learned it was to my first pedicure, collectively, their mouths hung open. Really. I was much chattered about in Vietnamese. Picking the nail color was a challenge. When I went to the chair, I got the guy, the water was way too hot at first, and the remote for the chair massage thingee kept falling on the floor. But after I settled in, I actually started to enjoy it. (I'll take a foot rub any day!) We talked and talked and laughed.
They gave me blue paper flip flops since I was wearing sandals, and I shuffled out of the shop when we were finished. Awkward. I had meant to try and find some flips at the dollar store. And when I looked for some to show off my fancy toes the next day, I realized there may be a reason I no longer wear them. I used to practically live in them. The reason is a thing called "aging."
My piggies may look a tad more fashionable than when I do my own toenails, but the jury's still out about whether I would have a second one. It is a fun thing to do with others, but its a bit pricey for me. Later we huddled in the parking lot trying to get a shot of our feet, laughing as we tried to keep our balance, while keeping our clothes out of the way and getting a good group "toe" photo. Since I told the flip-flop tale, you can guess which feet are mine, but if you hadn't heard that, as a reader of this blog, would you have been able to guess my feet by the nail color?

I can't believe you haven't had a pedi! The best part is the massage part that's for sure!
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed reading of this experience with fresh eyes! and, I love that you are doing "firsts". I think as long as we are still trying firsts we are doing alright. ;) I would have guessed pink. blessings ~ tanna
ReplyDeleteYou aren't the only one who has only ever had one pedicure. I had one 4 years ago for our daughter's wedding and since then I do my own. Of course I don't give myself the royal treatment with a massage etc. Just a new paint job. I have painful feet and toes so someone massaging them tends to be uncomfortable and sometimes painful. I lived in flipflops (we used to call them thongs, but today that refers to an undergarment!) for decades but my feet are older now and I can only stand them for a short period of time. I need more support and padding. Oh to grow old. Don't you just love it? Ha! Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteI had a pedicure on Tuesday! They are one of my favorite "special" treats. When my daughter was going through school for beautician, she needed a model for each new thing they learned. I agreed to the pedicure and was hooked. She doesn't do pedicures now (just hair) but she will polish my toe nails if I beg her. This time I was given a big discount at her salon for a pedicure and my happy toe nails are a rather bright orange :)
ReplyDeleteI would do my own pedicure but it is almost impossible to do my left foot due to some immobility from a couple of childhood hip surgeries.
Your piggies look very cute!
I have to confess - this is my greatest indulgence and I'd have one every month if I could afford it. I love the deep foot massage the most! I find that a professional pedicure lasts a very long time, but I think I like it mainly because I can't be bothered fiddling on my own and this way at least I'm always putting my best foot forward! As far as a manicure goes, I just can't be bothered. My nails are short and sensible and unpolished.
ReplyDeleteMy sister always wants to bond with one of these experiences so I had a manicure once. Never again. I can not justify the cost. I can't imagine a pedicure, but your pinkies sure do look cute.
ReplyDeletePodso,
ReplyDeleteDo it again! I leave the massage thingy off...hurts my arthritis! The massage is excellent!!!I try to go every 4~5 weeks! Pricy...but well worth it! The ladies at our parlor like to work on me. When I asked why...thinking it was my pleasing personality, or perhaps my uplifting conversation, or even my generous tip...the reply..."You have clean feet!" Ha!
Fondly,
Pat
I've never had a pedicure! If I did, I'd choose the same color as I do for my nails--"bare"! When I was a child, I wanted to have long red finger nails when I grew up. I would tastefully smoke cigarettes and sip martinis while showing them off. So far, no red nails or cigarettes and I've never had a martini!!
ReplyDeleteBest,
Bonnie
Emma, Ashley , and I did that right before the wedding! It was lovely~~~ my first time too.
ReplyDeleteI like the massage chair the best and not having to bend over and see if I went out of the lines ang got it on my skin:)
ReplyDeleteI would have guess you had the lighter color:)

I had a pedicure once, years ago, in Ecuador. I can't justify the price here, so I paint my own toenails, and cajole my husband into giving me foot massages. Manicures last about as long as it takes me to find my keys in my purse, so I keep my nails unpolished.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a fun time, nonetheless!
I know what you mean about nurses and manicures! My nails were always so short it hardly seemed worth the effort. I do like pedicures however, as I find it hard to cut my toe nails properly. I also love the foot massage that comes along with it!
ReplyDeleteIn Brooklyn there is a lot of nail salons and deep competition so a mani-pedi can be as cheap as $20 for both!

Pedi's last a lot longer than fingernail color.
ReplyDeleteI get several pedi's EVERY summer. I don't need to get them as often as I do my hands (every two weeks for hands)
In fact, I had my hands AND feet done yesterday getting ready for vacation.
I don't particularly LIKE the chair massage thing - - - but I sure LOVE what they do to my feet.
YOu may be a little bit behind the pedi times, but you have great toes non the less! I could tell which were your piggies by the camera angle.
ReplyDeleteI get pedicures every 3 weeks. It is like going to the podiatrist! I can never get my nails and feet to look as good and feel as comfortable at home. Since going, I have never had an ingrown toenail!
Once I convinced my 21 year old son to go with me. That was hysterical!
I've never had a pedi. I'm a DIYer through and through.
ReplyDeleteYour lil piggies look great & it looks like you all had a lot of fun. :)
You are not alone...I have yet to enjoy a pedicure! It may never happen, but who knows...maybe one day I shall. I used to have my nails done...it looked good but totally destroyed the nails. Took months for them to grow out properly again once I gave it up.
ReplyDeletePodso what a cute post. I never treat myself to a pedi. Always do my own. But I bet it was a nice to treat for yourself. Us ladies need to pamper ourselves more often as we always put others first.
ReplyDeleteI am way older than you and only had my firs mani/pedi a year ago. Since then, I have gone twice. I am a barefoot kind of a gal and my feet really become rough and even with all of the do it yourself products, my feet do not feel as dreamy, as having them done. Now I don't mind doing my own fingernails either, but hey...might as well go for the works...right. I cannot guess which feet are yours, but all tootsies look very nice~
ReplyDeleteFrom looking at the pictures....I think you polish color was pink/rose? Sounds like you had fun, you brave girl.
ReplyDeleteI notice many familiar toes in this picture!=) And unlike certain unnamed people I might be related to, I do NOT like pedicures. My feet are so sensitive and I am miserable sitting in the chair trying not to squirm. But I must admit that I don't take enough care of my feet myself, so they do always look better after one. Don't worry if you didn't enjoy it, though, you're not alone! And I would have definitely guessed pink for you.=)
