the little red suitcase

My boys traveled with a knapsack on their backs, filled with books and other amusements for the long flights to Africa and back. When I was a child our travel was by car or train, and our less exotic destination was always our grandparents' houses. I always had my little red suitcase with me. I recently found it among my mother's things. Of course the memories came flooding to my mind and I can open it now and see exactly what was tucked inside. My faithful stuffed rabbit endured many a costume change as we drove those many miles ...primarily with pretty hankies and pop beads (remember them?!)

It looks pretty rough but I decided to make it a platform this year for our little tree.
And how enhanced this little tree is now with this box of tinsel my friend Pamela gave me.

I even think they'd look nice on the big tree.
They reflect the light so nicely.

  1. Such special memories you must have enjoyed while peaking inside the little red suitcase. In my mind's eye, I can see you as a precious little girl traveling with your rabbit and changing his outfits as you went along... Sweet. So sweet. I'm glad you are using it as a part of your decorations and that you shared this memory with us. Thank you and Merry Christmas to you and yours, Dotsie! blessings ~ tanna

  2. I so remember pop beads! Too bad they don't make them anymore - I think they'd be great on Christmas trees...

  3. Your flights to Africa sound so interesting...I would love to hear more. Perhaps you have other posts about them, after Christmas if I can remember ....I'll come search for them. I too remember pop beads...I loved them and 'popped' away happily for who knows if it was months or actually years...lol. Your little red suitcase would have lots to tell us I'm sure. I can imagine a children's book where that little suitcase talks. Merry Christmas Podso! Your blog is a favorite of mine, you are a good writer!!

  5. What a lovely memory! I remember those long car trips (and train trips too) with little bags of activities for my sisters and me.

I'm sending good wishes for Christmas and the coming year to you and your loved ones.

    Best,
    Bonnie

  6. What a cute little suitcase and it looks sweet as a platform for your tree. I remember pop beads and forgot about them until you mentioned them. They'd be deemed unsafe for small hands (and mouths) today. I forgot to put my Victorian tinsel on the tree this year! Oh well, there's always next year. Have a very blessed
    Christmas Dotsie! Blessings, Pamela

  7. Podso,
Oh what a lovely keepsake...I, too, have a red suitcase that I used when having sleep~overs with my BFF!!!Pop beads...I had almost forgotten all about them. Truth being...they were possibly the only "girly" thing I enjoyed playing with! Ha! Thank you for the memories of "my traveling suitcase"...and for sharing yours as well. I do enjoy using vintage items in home decor! Merry Christmas, dearest one!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  11. Hello Podso
It's so nice that you still have your childhood red suitcase, what memories are tucked inside!
I remember pop beads but hadn't thought of them until now, they used to amuse me too.
The Victorian tinsel is the same container I've had for years and used on large and now, our small tinsel tree.
    Merry Christmas.

  12. Oh! How your little red suitcase brought back memories to me! I had a similar one that I packed every summer to go to my grandmother's house in Pennsylvania for a week. It is amazing to think such a little box could hold all our important childhood belongings ;) My favorite thing to bring was my plastic charm prize collection that came from many turns of a penny gumball machine.
