We are enjoying a definitive cold snap right now which I actually love, still having a bit of "northern blood" in my veins. Cold weather is easy to take down here as we know it can't last too long. I have a few more "over the back fence" comments but since it's so cold, I'll invite you in for a hot cup of tea, rather than standing at the fence.
The other day I went to a craft store and found what I want but was appalled at the price. "Don't you have a coupon?" I asked the young clerk, eyeing the flyers next to the cash register. "No I don't, but do you have a smart phone?" And she proceded to walk me through to a 50% coupon, which, she told me, is there on my phone for every time I shop in the store. I may be not quite up on the coupon aspect of a smart phone but at least she thought I might have such a phone.
Whereas when at my next stop at T-g-t, checking out clock radios (which suddenly sort of sounds like a "dinosaur"), the not so young saleswoman asked if she could help and then said, "I assume you just mean a clock radio, not one that would play an i-pod or iPhone." I was a bit taken back that she assumed I would not want such things--or maybe didn't even know about them. That's more like what a younger person would think about an older person.
At our mentor group this month we taught about basic mending--how to sew on a button, mend a seam or sew a hem. It seemed to be much appreciated, and I'm trying to remember how I learned to do such things. We mentors had made teacup pincushions for the girls to take home. You can imagine how easy they were to do, and yes we did glue the cup and saucer together, and the cushions got a shot of glue to stay in the cup. We bagged them up with a bow along with some pins, a spool of basic gray thread and a pair of scissors. Cute! Now, how about a second cup of tea?

Hi Podso,
ReplyDeleteThese are without a doubt the cutest pincushions I've ever seen!!! What a great idea! I love teacups, and light mending is about all I can do in the sewing department. I'm hoping, however, to take a sewing class next month if it's not full already.
Your back fence comments were interesting today. It sounds like your young sales clerk was more helpful and open-minded than the older clerk. We never know, do we?
If you have a chance, I'd love for you to visit my blog and read my post on our trip to England. I know you've been, and I thought you might enjoy my pictures of the incomparable English countryside. Not trying to self-promote -- I just knew you had visited England at some point.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend -- I rather enjoy the winter weather, too. :)
Denise
I've been holding out on getting a smart phone, but it seems it's inevitable. Problem is, you have to be smarter than the phone. /~"
ReplyDeleteWhat thoughtful things to do for the girls...teach basic sewing and gift a tea cup pincushion...all are lovely. My tea cup pincushion is one of my favorite things in my sewing room.
ReplyDeleteA smart phone might be the way to go if one always gets 50% off at the craft store. Wow. I have been holding off from getting one, too. Way off. I don't want to spend the extra dollars to support the thing.
What a cute gift such a pincushion would be for my nieces.
ReplyDeleteI have a smart phone and use about 1/4 of its capacity - or less. It's for work and I find it sad how our phones rule our lives today.
I am now so far behind when it comes to technology, it's not funny. I do print out the coupons, but even that challenges me. :)
ReplyDeleteMy sister taught me the basics of sewing, and then there was Home Economics class in the 7th grade.
Love the tea cup pin cushions and the fact that you all come together to share sewing basics with others!
Hugs,
Zuzu
A mentor group! How awesome is that? I love the teacups and will be on the look out so I can make one, too. Love it!
ReplyDeleteI am smart phone-less. Like Vee, I cannot justify the expense, so (for now) I will settle for my not-so-smart phone. ;)
ReplyDeleteI love those charming pin cushions...but not so much as I love the idea of your mentoring group! The older women teaching the younger...such a Biblical concept! Those young women are so blessed!
I LOVE the pin cushions!!!!!!!!1 I made sure that our sons know how to sew and IRON:)
ReplyDeleteI just found out how to use that coupon feature too. We only have one cell phone and just recently got one that can text:)
Love that you are mentoring young women!!
Leann
The teacup pin cushions are darling...My mother used to mend everything by hand and I learned to thread a needle by the time I was seven. I think that's why I love embroidery so much.
ReplyDeleteI'm still learning all of the things my phone has to offer. Sometimes I'm just amazed!
XO,
Jane
Oh those teacups are adorable!!! What is a mentor program? I am so interested. I get so many of my daughter's friends asking me how to do things like sew, cook, etc, and would love to have a way to teach a group these things.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Kris
ReplyDeleteWhen you say "cold snap" I just really need to hear a temperature so I can "giggle" at you if you say 50 or something!
We are getting a GORGEOUS snow today - - - at the tail end of our "cold snap" in which we had a couple of days whose high temp was 0. Early next week we are having a "heat wave" go through with one day's high of 40. I'm NEVER impressed with a "heat wave" in winter, as you well know.
Technologie eh? I was in Mi--aels the other day and the young gal in front of me used her smart phone to use a coupon for her purchase. I guess I have a stupid phone. So behind the times. I love the teacup pin cushions! They are really cute and a sweet gift idea.
ReplyDeleteDotsie,
ReplyDeleteI have a smart phone and love it but didn't know about the coupon thing! I shall have to smarten up!It is chilly in Florida but my boys in Maine are dealing with below zero temps so it is best not to mention it to them!
The pin-cushions are adorable and mentoring is wonderful.
Carol
Hi Dotsie
ReplyDeleteYour mentoring group is such an inspiration. I recently read on another blog that wool is the best thing to put in pin cushions as the oil in it keeps the needles conditioned. Of course, this gal had sheep to get the wool from. :-)
I can get coupons on my iPad for Michael's and just have to show the clerk at the desk for her to scan the bar code. Our phone does nothing but dial - for emergencies and I don't use it for photos.
Stay warm.
Judith
Those pincushions are just wonderful!!! I think it is so nice that you all are passing down these skills. I don't remember when I learned to sew on a button or hem either... but I'm glad I know how and I'm sure these young ladies are too! PLUS they received those beautiful pincushions! Awesome.
ReplyDeleteThe smartphone... lol... mine is smarter than I am. ;) blessings ~ tanna
Hello my friend
ReplyDeleteI just spent a lovely time catching up on some of your older posts. I enjoyed the little bit of cold weather too. We had a fine fire going and I made a big pot of soup and I drank lots of tea ( which I do all the time really). I'm glad that you are having a little more time with your mom. ((Hugs)) Rhondi
Podso,
ReplyDeleteThis post sounds (almsot) like my "panty hose" story at JC Penny!!! Two salesclerks, about the same age...but totally different reactions to my quest for new stockings!!! The young lady @ Dillard's is the one who understood that NOT all people go without stockings even if "like is much more causal these days"!!!
I love the cups...but more importantly... I love the generational mentoring you are doing...perhaps in the future we will all treat one another with kindness and respect!!!
Fondly,
Pat
Your pincushions are so sweet, what a great little gift. So nice you are teaching others to sew, it is still a handy skill to have. Hope you have a wonderful weekend, Laura
ReplyDeleteWhat a delightful post. Had to giggle at the clerks comments. I love your teacup pincushions. What a sweet gift.
ReplyDeletefun stuff Podso!
ReplyDeleteI have a Smart phone...I don't think it's very smart and when I try to use it I don't feel very smart!
ReplyDeleteI say let's go back to the good ole days!
Sweet pin cushions...really sweet!
Blessings,
Cindy
That's a cute story, how nice that you can now simply show them your coupon on your phone!
ReplyDeleteYour teacup pincushions are lovely!
Have a great week.
Cindy
