transformed

I've been looking for a small sideboard for years. It had to be a certain size and those measurement were always tucked in my purse along with a small measuring tape.

When I least expected it, there she was! She was actually the lower part of a hutch. The seller told me people buy the tops of hutches and make them into bookshelves. This was a good piece, solid maple and very well built. "You will paint it, won't you?" he asked.

It seemed a shame to cover such beautiful wood but another reason for my quest was a
desire to try out some creativity by painting and distressing a piece of furniture. I can remember
my mom doing something similar when I was in high school, back then they called it "antiquing."

I did research on chalk paint and watched "how-to" videos. I learned a lot and
was ready to give it a try on a weekend when the Gardener was out of town.
It worked just as it was supposed to. But when it came time to distress it,
I was more than a tad nervous.  I took a deep breath and began the process.
I'm not sure I did it totally according to directions, but
I do like how it turned out.
The most fun was transforming the hardware
from brass to a sort of burnished silver patina.
It was so easy.
The biggest challenge was moving this heavy piece of furniture
from garage to house. We had a dolly and amazingly
moved it without having to call on a neighbor for help.
I love having more room for storage
and space to serve when we have dinner guests.
I probably should get a pair of tall buffet lamps eventually,
but for now I'm just enjoying it as it is.
I did not use ASCP but what I call a "knock off" from
our local big box hardware store. It seemed to work fine,
though never having tried the other, I can't compare.

  2. I know why they call it "distressing" now because that is how I'd feel, too--distressed--and why I've not attempted it! Yours turned out beautifully!

  3. I'm thinking about "restoring" a few pieces we already have. Through the years, they have been distressed through use. Now, I'd like them to be a bit more stylishly distressed. I'm not sure what ASCP is.

    Bonnie

  5. I think you did a fabulous job- I love the new look. I've been reading up on chalk painting and I'm still pretty scared to try it...but have two dressers ready to go when I get brave enough!

  7. You did a great job...love the new look. What did the Gardner think of your project? I like that it only takes a couple coats of paint and dries so fast, unlike other paints.
I just got into the chalk painting, too. I have done a couple pieces (can see them in my latest post)...the aqua hoosier I distressed a little and the white sideboard I didn't. Maybe the next piece I will do a little more distressing, we will see.

  9. You did a great job on this Dotsie! I really like it. I've never tried anything like that before and it's nice to know that chalk paint from the big box store can do the job too. It looks lovely and I'm sure you will make good use of it.

  15. You did a fabulous job on this piece Dotsie, the resulting colour and hardware makes it quite attractive. I'm looking for something similar to house my collection of napkins and some of the tablecloths. I saw on someone's blog once a wooden clothes horse for storing linens and that's what I've put in the basement for my tablecloths so far.

  18. Oh My this is not just wonderful, but I got a giggle too. My friend Sandy and I had a 4 1/2 hour luncheon the other day and I told her about a desk that I wanted to possibly antiquette. She suggested chalking it...say what? AND my husby was also out of town and and so I thought I was all set. Then I told the man at Lowes that I had an old roll top, that was not $$$ but it needed a lift. Instead of the paint thought, the chalking, he suggested first trying to bring life back into it with wood rejuvenation. I ended up doing that, as we had hot, humid, rainy weather and I was concerned for the process drying if I did the other. Maybe next time he leaves I will give this a try...that will be a year ;) huge sigh. You did a brilliant job, just beautiful and you gave me courage too~

Dear Podso...this is making me GREEN with envy....I just love it to pieces and you did a magnificent job...I don't think there's any right or wrong...that's the wonder of paint and distressing done in the way YOU want. Your distressing is just right for me...I am not into chippy or heavy distressing and your new piece would LOVE to live in MY house. ....SO...send it to me. :)

  20. I absolutely love the transformation, Dotsie! Yeah, ASCP is pretty pricey and not available nearby. Glad you found something that worked so well. The result of all your research and hard work is amazing! I hope it inspires me. Lol I also have wanted a sideboard. Interesting that it's the bottom of a hutch. I'll keep that in mind. Beautiful!

  33. I enjoyed this post very much, Dotsie, because I too want to try using chalk paint. I resisted for a long time, mainly because it seemed that everyone was jumping on the band wagon with it, and I'm funny that way. :) But I'm really starting to see the advantages of using chalk paint for a few pieces in the house. I hadn't thought of watching videos for extra instruction, but I'm so glad you mentioned it because I'll do that very thing. My husband has started doing that for some of his various projects around the house, and I think the videos are helpful.

You did a great job on your sideboard!! I really like the color you chose and what you did with the hardware. I think it looks especially pretty with the plates hanging on the wall behind it and the lamp on top. Lovely! Thanks for sharing, Dotsie, and have a great week.

    Hugs,

    Denise

  35. I meant to say the other day when you posted this....WOW. You're transformed it. I love it very much. I know what you mean about being a shame to cover the wood, but that shade of maple isn't my favorite....grew up with too much of it, and you've made it much prettier.
