Is there anything quite so mesmerizing as the sea?
Each wave speaks new words,
crashing in a slightly different place as the tide creeps in or out.
Thoughts come more clearly,
it's easier to breathe deeply.
Maybe more so on a gray blustery day.
We linger just a few more minutes;
it's hard to pull away.
The Gardener and I spent a long weekend at the beach.
So restful. We even enjoyed a full day of torrential rain
because we had nowhere to go. We read and napped.
And we came home refreshed.
it's hard to pull away.
The Gardener and I spent a long weekend at the beach.
So restful. We even enjoyed a full day of torrential rain
because we had nowhere to go. We read and napped.
And we came home refreshed.
"My soul is full of longing
for the secret of the sea,
and the heart of the great ocean sends
a thrilling pulse through me."
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Sounds lovely! I could use a trip to the sea about now.
ReplyDeleteI love the beach at this time of year. Not so much a summer beach lover. We always went to Kiawah when we lived in Charleston. Just pristine beach.
ReplyDeleteBest,
Bonnie
Oh..we are kindred spirits, Dotsie...like you, I also love being by the sea...moreso on a gray day! The sun can be so blinding (although it is beautiful) but there is nothing like a cloudy day on the beach, especially early in the morning when there is hardly oanyone around. I will be heading to the beach at Destin, FL tomorrow!! We are going to celebrate my hubby's sister's birthday...one drawback...it's SPRING BREAK! :( They live in a gated community so hopefully it won't be too bad there. Lovely, photos, BTW :)
ReplyDeleteI wish we lived closer to the ocean. We're 3 hours away and have to cross the Bay Bridge and sit in traffic if you go for a weekend. So when we are able to go it's a real treat! I love Anne Lindbergh's "Gift from the Sea" and is reminiscent of the Longfellow poem. Lovely!
ReplyDeleteWe have a friend we visit in Califronia, and we can sit for hours and watch the waves.
ReplyDeleteI agree wholeheartedly, Dotsie! The ocean is beautiful and restorative. A gift from God.
ReplyDeleteThat looks so lovely! What a great way to relax. I can almost hear the waves. Beautiful photos.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way about the ocean, Dotsie. What a treat to be able to enjoy a weekend there with your husband. The ocean and the mountains have a wonderful, calming balm for my soul. ♥
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!

Between you and Longfellow, you said it all. There is something so wonderful about the sea. Glad you and the Gardener enjoyed a refreshing getaway. blessings ~ tanna
ReplyDeleteOh yes, it's definitely restful being near a body of water. I find it interesting when I read of someone else mentioning naps, glad I'm not the only one - even if it's only a cat nap!
ReplyDeleteAnd Henry meant it, too. He would walk miles from the city proper to visit the lighthouse keepers or so the story goes.
ReplyDeleteSo glad that you and your beloved had a relaxing time seaside. There really is nothing like it.
So glad. Good post. Something happens to our souls by the sea.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a weekend that approaches perfection! I feel calm just looking at your photos and reading your words. The ocean is awesome and points to its Creator!
ReplyDeleteYou describe it so well with such imagery
ReplyDeleteHow nice to sneak away and get to enjoy the sea! It does hold a lot of magic for me as well.
ReplyDeleteI caught up with the posts I missed too. That tiger is magnificent! And the letter your Mom wrote, so special. Why oh why have lost the art of the handwritten letter? I love to both write letters and receive them.
Take care
XO Kris
That is truly beautiful! And your photos are sheer visual poetry. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI so agree Dotsie. Being at the ocean calms the mind and soothes the spirit. I just love it. :) How neat that we were at the coast at the same time! Thanks so much for your visit and comments. I was so busy when we got home it's taken me a few days to catch up on my visits. I find it hard to return to reality after a restful vacation, how about you?
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy your weekend, Dotsie.
Hugs,
Denise
Your words capture the essence of a quiet time spent at the ocean. All worries and concerns are washed away by the waves and a sense of peace envelopes those who watch the waves roll in. Lovely post!
ReplyDeletePodso,
ReplyDeleteI've been a "land locked" person all my life, dear friend!!!
Even in our years of living in Europe, I still lived where the Sea was not.
My closest adventure would have to be at Padre Island in my twenties while on vacation when "Mr.Ed" was stationed in Texas.
The sound of the waves along the beach made me very tired; much like what people who visit the Prairie say of the wind.
A joy you have,of time at the Sea, that I will never know.
Thank you for always sharing from your heart!!!
Fondly,
Pat
I love the quote that the cure for anything is salt water...tears, the sea or sweat!! walk on the beach always puts life into perspective for me.
