look for beauty

"We always see what we are looking for, and if our mind has become
trained to look for trouble and difficulty and all dark and
dreary things, we find just what we seek.
"On the other hand, it is quite easy to form the habit of looking always for beauty,
for good, for happiness, for gladness, and here, too, we
shall find precisely what we seek." (J.R. Miller, born in 1840)
"What we see depends mainly on what we look for."
So said John Lubbock, a British statesman in the 1800s.

  1. I love this, Dotsie!! You're right (or J. R. Miller is right), it's a habit that can be cultivated. And I think it is so much different than just "positive thinking" (which I am not a fan of). It is looking for God's blessing and His hand and cultivating a heart of thankfulness! Yes, beauty!!

  2. You've beautifully illustrated J. R. Miller's words! I have at least one J. R. Miller book on my shelf. I shall have to find it and reread it. I love that decorative "grill". What is it?

  12. I have always looked for the beauty in everyday. Maybe because I live a simple life the smallest things delight my heart. I am the oldest of nine children. We lived on a farm miles and miles away from our nearest neighbor and time passed very slowly . I learned as a child to look with my eyes wide open to the wonders that surrounded me ...I am thankful.

  15. JR Miller was such a genius! I completely agree with his thoughts on training ourselves to look for beauty. When we do we see it everywhere!

    These photos are lovely.

  20. Looking for beauty....

    A lovely attitude...

Me'thinks posting our photos, helps us be more aware of our surroundings...

And thus, we can more notice, things of beauty.

Which before, might have passed in front of our eyes, mostly unnoticed.

    A wonderful gift, "from" blogging...

    Tessa~
