the exchange

There's a freshness in our house.  A"burr under my saddle" that has confounded my sense of well being ever so very slightly for years is now gone. Certainly it didn't take over my life, but when I walked through my house something nagged at the back of my mind.

I'm sure you who are "house people" get what I'm saying, how you know something's not quite right. Several years ago we switched our living room and dining room around on a trial basis. When we moved the chandelier, things became serious. We have loved the new arrangement and the expanded space when we have a crowd--or even just a handful--around our extendable table.

It was the corner cabinet that was the culprit of this burr. First of all, to go way back, it used to be wood toned that I stained when we bought it unfinished. Later I painted it white, which I have loved, and thought the white made it seem more "built in." A friend told me I'd eventually regret that decision. Not yet. But to have a cabinet of china in the living room, and an antique "secretary" with bookcase in the dining room just didn't seem right. To move them would be an ordeal. Both, excellent storage pieces, would need emptying and strong men to move them.
I think this looks like we're painting.
I got more serious right after Christmas and spent some time with a photo editing program. I removed the secretary from a photo of the living room and inserted the corner cabinet. I was afraid of all the work if it didn't end up looking right and I just didn't know. So I needed a visual, and to prove to the Gardener that it might be OK.

I am blessed with a patient man who also loves house stuff and likes changing a room around and trying to improve things. He squinted at my rough photos and said, "Yes."
We chose to do "Project Move" late one afternoon after a very busy day that included taking down Christmas decorations and the tree, taking it apart, and stuffing it back in it's storage container in the corner of the attic (my job as the Gardener's 6'6" frame does not fit in the corner of the attic.)
What a job! We didn't actually carry the furniture, we rather found a way to dance with it, twisting and turning, hugging it, using every muscle in our bodies. We were one strong man with a bad back, and a silly, determined older lady who has danced with furniture more than once. But as soon as that corner cabinet arrived home in it's new spot I gave a small screech of delight. She was where she belonged.

It all seems right now. The after story is that as I cooked supper that night I felt so tired that every muscle ached. And I felt cold, as I sometimes do after overworking physically. I began to chide myself for being so stupid to think I could still do all of that in one day. Then chills set in in earnest with full blown body aches. Still thinking it was overwork, I headed to bed and slept for the next 24 hours, interrupted only by trips to the bathroom. The stomach flu. What a conundrum.

  1. Love your rearrangement of the cupboard...and I don't think you will ever regret painting it, will you?
Sorry you went down with a nasty attack. Maybe you were, as my grandma used to say, 'Doing Too Much'.

  2. Lovely rearrangement and I can totally empathize with the stomach flu part, unfortunately. The corner cupboard is perfect in that spot! So glad you finished your Project Move before the yucky stuff hit! ;)

  3. You are so right! Both pieces look fabulous in their new locations. I am such a dunce that I probably would never have figured out how much better it could look. Hope that you folks are none the worse for the dance.

  4. Dotsi, we have thought of changing our living room into our dining room as you have done. It would give us the room we need when the whole family is here. I think your white corner cabinet looks great in your dining room. I do hope you are feeling better. There seems to be a lot going around these days. I've had a cough that attacks me in the evenings and keeps me from getting a good nights sleep. Maybe we both have been a little too busy. Happy New Year. ♥

  5. Now you've got me thinking Dotsie!
I've had that 'burr' feeling for a long time about our living room come dining room - we are now in a townhouse and the proportions are not large.
I know the problem is too much furniture in a small space - however we need two couches and two chairs for times when there are more people than just Derby and Joan!
It's a tricky one to sort out.

I'm glad you've solved your problem - your corner unit looks perfect and please don't change the colour - for now!

  6. I sure hope you are feeling better now. That old flu is a drag! And I'm glad you figured some things out about your house. I feel that way sometimes about the things I have on shelves and tables. Every time I walk by...I'll move it a bit. I don't usually feel like it's right until I've completely taken it away. You have a beautiful home and it's nice that your hubby likes to help! Take care of yourself! Hugs!

  7. PS I like your new banner. Is that you?

  8. Oh dear. The flu hit us, too, but not the stomach variety. Hope you are on the mend and will soon feel back to normal. Your "burr" resulted in a great switch around. The corner unit really does look lovely.

  9. Looks wonderful and love the little light you put in it. You're always so clever. But so sorry you got sick. Ain't that the way?

  11. Here I was relating along with you moving the furniture inch by inch (pianos are wonderful too) and smiling at the your results and boom; a surprise ending out of no where. Typical of those 'bugs'. Just glad it didn't hit half way from the living room to the dining room and delayed the project. The cabinet looks great in its new location.

  12. Oh, Dotsie! I'm so sorry you got that awful bug! Our Alex has it now (hoping more of us don't come down with it). That was a very long day of work you did. But, I LOVE the switch! I can absolutely identify with the sniggling feeling that something isn't quite right... and then the glee when you find the answer! Hope you are feeling MUCH, MUCH better by now. And, you are right... about the aches and pains reminding us. blessings and hugs ~ tanna

  13. I love the new arrangement! I have a china cabinet very much like yours (the wooden one)! Question: have you ever used Super Sliders? I have some in different sizes and they have a slick side for moving on carpet and you can also get ones with thick felt for moving on wood floors. I have moved a heavy wooden armoire all by my lonesome...clear across a room...only needed a little help lifting the corners onto the sliders. Check them out! Sorry you got a nasty bug...hope it's gone now! Happy New Year, Dotsie!

  14. I can identify with furniture placing nagging one and have done 'the dance' countless times myself. I have to admit having hardwood floors now makes it much easier. Glad I'm not the only one that is whooped after household duties - I ended up vacuuming and washing floors today after the Christmas take down yesterday. I keep wondering what it will be like in 10 years. lol
Flu and colds making the rounds in our parts as well, wishing you better days and good health Dotsie.

  15. LOVE the new places for the furniture...your right, it's perfect! Can't imagine why you'd regret the white...I am loving that too. Sorry about the stomach bug. Nothing worse in my opinion. Hopefully it's all over now. Have a good week!

  16. Don't you just love it when a plan comes together?? It looks great and the perfect touch to complete the dining room. It reminds me of something I think Grandmother F said about our mothers' use of furniture. Your mother had a china cabinet that she used as a secretary and mine had a secretary that she used as a china cabinet. Am I remembering that correctly? I do know that my mother always kept her pretty tea cups in the secretary which Mark now has (and it contains books!). I hope you are feeling back to normal after your exertions and illness!

  17. I love this (not you getting sick, though)!

I am a furniture mover and it would have made me crazy, too, to have those pieces in the wrong rooms. Both pieces look wonderful in their new places!

Hope you are on the mend!

  18. Dotsie, the corner cupboard looks like it was made for that spot! It's a good thing you listened to your house-y instincts and made it work. (Even if you did nearly wear yourselves out! Eek!)

Oh, but getting the stomach flu after such a day...ugh. The absolute worst of short-term illnesses in my estimation. Hope you're healthy the rest of the winter!

  19. Dotsie, I hope you are feeling better. I know the feeling once you make a decision it needs to be executed as soon as possible. It looks great. Wishing you a Happy New Year in 2017! Sylvia D.

  20. Sorry to hear you were sick. Glad it was only 24 hours! I wish you'd consulted me before your moved your heavy furniture so I could have told you about the little gliders you can put under heavy furniture so you can push it where you want it. But you got the job done and it looks great.

  21. Hope you are feeling better! Your post makes me want to go have a look and see if we could move our stuff around for the new year. I really like the looks of your white cabinet.

  28. While I'm glad your furniture exchange is a great success, I am so sorry your health exchange went from good to poorly for awhile and hope you have good health the rest of 2017 xx

  29. So sorry you've got a bug! Hope you're well soon. What a brilliant idea you had to make the switch "virtually" first! I don't know that I have the tech skills to do that, but I'm sure going to look into it next time I have a decision like that to make. And it was the right decision -- both rooms look beautiful!

  30. ohoh--I ahd that same stomach bug on New Year's Eve! I suffered the worse chills I've ever had with it. Thankfully, it only lasted 48 hours. Hope you are also completely better now!

Your furniture rearrangement looks perfect! We bought "sliding pads" at Home Depot that are great help when we need to move furniture as they glide over carpet or wood floors. All one has to do is put a pad under each leg of the furnture and then push.

  31. Oh NO!!!! I hope by now you are feeling better, Dotsie!

And - for whatever its worth coming from lil ole' me....love love love the change. It is just perfect - both pieces fit their prospective spots perfectly!!!

Good health to you, sweet friend. Hugs!

  32. I love this change Dotsie. The white corner cabinet is perfect there in the dining room and the desk in the living room. They are beautiful pieces. I'm sorry you got the flu after all your yard work taking down Christmas and moving furniture. I've got the same bug with chills and aches and nausea. Thankful I didn't get 'sick' to my stomach. The aches are still here today but I could eat lunch so might be on the mend. Take care. Pam
