out of the mouth of babes comes ...

…comfort. Do you find it true? Kids and dogs seem to sense when you're sad and know
just what to do. I had a very hard adjustment when we first moved to Africa with a baby
and a toddler. Tears came frequently, especially at the beginning of a new day.
I'd sit in the kitchen, tears streaming down my face,
trying to muster up energy to make yucky porridge, missing cheerios for the boys.
I wondered how I could manage this new way of living.
(I did eventually adjust and loved our life there.)
Along would come Eldest with his arms wide open to hug and comfort me.
He wasn't quite three.

The Gardener has been very ill in recent weeks. I can write about it now because he is
getting well. A vicious virus attacked his body. It's been a rough patch and good to see light
at the end of the tunnel. One day Youngest son suggested I go over to spend time
with the grands. As we cuddled on the couch to read stories, I could tell they knew something was up.
They were so sweet and just being with them was a huge dose of a medicine called comfort.
Photos: my two best givers of comfort,
in Africa, long before they became grown men.

  4. Dotsie, I'm sorry to hear The Gardener has been ill, but elated to hear he is on the mend. I agree that animals and young children have a 6th sense about giving comfort when needed.....comfort with skin on it, I call it. :-)

  11. I sure hope your husband continues to improve and feel better. And I know what you mean about little ones. I raised 4 sons and got a lot of comfort from them during some hard times when they were little. I still love getting 'boy hugs' no matter how old they are. Sending you extra hugs too, Diane

  13. Good to hear your husband is getting better, it's a scare when they are very ill. Young people can sure pick up on our emotions and I've had comfort from our grands at different times and as you say, having a dog or cat is comfort in itself.
Prayers for your hubby to be well and comfort for you.
    Hugs,
    Judith

  14. I am so glad to hear that your husband is recovering after this nasty virus. These things come at us from out of the blue. Yes, I have found that children are good comforters and cats and dogs are pretty good, too.

  15. This is such an adorable post. The children are beautiful. I have to say I admire you and your wringer washer in the last pic. I looks identical to the only one my grandmother used. She's been gone for some time now but and her washer is out in my building now. Your post was comforting to me bringing memories of Grandma doing laundry and us kids running around her feet. Best wishes for a great weekend!

  17. Nothing any sweeter or any more special than little children to help us through. Happy to hear your husband is getting better, so nice to hear good news. Love that wringer washer, my grandma had one her side porch and I loved watching her use it. She actually seemed to enjoy using it.
    Happy Saturday

  21. I'm so glad you received the comfort you needed from your sweet grands, Dotsie! I's so sorry the Gardener has been so sick and sorry we didn't know. I'm VERY GLAD to hear that he's on the mend; viruses are a scary, scary thing.

Children can be so loving, and I think they learn much of that from us. There is nothing else like their sweet, loving ways. Take care, Dotsie, and I'm glad your husband is getting better!

    Warm hugs,
