the rest of the day

Rest. What is it?  I'm an activist and enjoy work and a busy life.
But I also long for quiet and rest.
I'm an enigma.
So when I got sick yet again with a throat so sore I thought it
must be strep, I went right to the doctor.
We were to keep the grandchildren this week while their
parents are away. So I needed to know what we were dealing with.
Diagnosis? A virus. Treatment: True rest, fluids,
and no grandkids (too contagious). Big disappointment.
I admit I don't know much about rest.
But I tried. Only two small loads of wash and then I rested on
the couch most of the day, sipping water or tea,
drifting off into a nap. The Gardener heated leftovers for dinner
and cleaned up the kitchen. I think it actually helped.
I feel better today and plan to rest another day.
Maybe I'm learning something.
"Most of the things we need to be most fully alive never
come in busyness. They grow in rest."
~Mark Buchanan, The Holy Wild: Trusting in the Character of God.

  1. I hope following the doctor's orders will get you well quickly. I do think the worst thing about getting sick is when it ruins our plans! I know I view illness differently when it doesn't interfere with something I want or need to do!

  3. There are so many nasty viruses around here, and people are suffering. Take care and get lots of rest.

  5. I'm sorry you caught that virus and the grands are off limits for now. I am one who doesn't rest either, especially when I'm sick. I don't take to my bed but stay up and about and doing things with the occasional nap in between. Take care and feel better and rest.

  6. There certainly is a lot of sickness going around. I'm so sorry you are ill. It's so hard to take it easy--I think that comes from being a mother. We hardly ever allow ourselves time to rest. I'm happy to hear you have been resting and are feeling better today. ♥

  7. Rats! Disappointments all around I am sure. Glad that it was not strep, but sorry that you caught any bug at all. Take it easy and rest. Hope that Mr. Podso is good around the kitchen and laundry room.

  8. I'm so sorry you're sick again, Dotsie! You've had a rough winter this year. I know you were disappointed not to keep your grandchildren, and they're probably even more disappointed. :) I'm glad you've been resting and hope you're completely better very soon!

    Hugs,

    Denise

  10. I'm very sorry you are sick and missed a visit from the grands too. But I hope you can keep resting so that you are fully recovered. It's hard... I know but it will be worth it. Take care! Hugs, Diane

  11. There's been a lot of illness around this year. I'm sorry you've had several bouts with it. Rest is hard to do. When I lie around on the couch I feel both restless (there are things to be done) and guilty (surely I'm not sick enough not to work). I hope you recover quickly. Rest helps!

  12. It's hard to keep a good woman down, we're conditioned to continually push ourselves. Rest up and maybe you can make it up to the grands another time.
    Get well soon Dotsie.

  13. Oh NO feeling poorly again - almost as though it never quite LEFT ya, my friend. Boo hiss. Well I am SO GLAD to read you are actually following doctor's orders - and seeing the benefit of this much-needed rest. And I am glad you are being pampered a tiny bit.

Sure wish we were closer so I could bring you some homemade chicken noodle soup! Praying for your super fast recovery, it has to ache your heart to pieces to have had to cancel seeing your grandloves.

  14. Doesn't it seem like there are some years when we catch everything that goes around? Sorry that this is that year for you, Dotsie! Praying that you'll be able to rest...deep, restorative rest for body and soul. I am not familiar with the author you quoted, but I love that quote! I also like your play on words in the title. :)

  15. I'm so sorry that you are sick again. Not fun! :( I hope you feel better soon and heal quickly. Maybe husband needs to clean your kitchen again and that will help. :-)

I had Mark Buchanan book but never finished it. Did you learn a lot from it?

  16. Wow. That quote really warrants some questions... thoughts... introspection. You are a wise woman, Dotsie. You will garner the lessons of this time. I sure hope you are feeling MUCH better SOON!! blessings and hugs ~ tanna

  17. I understand that inability to remain supine - but I am glad to hear that you made such an effort and that your husband was able to encourage it by arranging dinner and cleaning up afterwards. It's that sort of thing that makes it possible for us to rest! I hope you are soon feeling 100% again.

  18. Oh dear, that dreaded winter word - virus. Hard to escape during the cold months.
You did well to rest up, so often hard to do when one is used to being on the move and busy.
Your dear Gardener came up trumps - what more can you ask!
I agree with the words in your quote…. For me it is… Be still and know that I am God.
Mark Buchanan's writing is worth pursuing, I'm off to the Book Depository.
Take care and rest some more!

  19. Sorry about your plans. I'm sure the grands were disappointed as well. I am happy you were able to rest (somewhat) and that you are feeling better. I find movies help to keep me more content in bed, and if I fall asleep so much the better.
