book club

It was book club time again last week.
It always seems to be a big event as we don't meet that often.
 The food was beautiful
(this idea came from Stone Gable)
and the table lovely in its simplicity, burlap and spring colors.
But of course it was the conversation that was the "icing" on
the lovely setting and delicious food.
We all have been touched by pain and suffering.
And often ask why.
The book is a new one and digs deeply into the subject
while being filled with stories.
The author pastors a large church in Manhattan.
He speaks and writes clearly and to the point.
I want to read it again.

  1. There seems to be a place for me at the table. Wish I could have been there for a good discussion and delicious food.

  2. Everything looks so lovely, Dotsie. What a great idea to combine your book discussion with food. :-) The table setting was simple and elegant...what was in the bags? The flower tartlets set on dried peas (?) were just perfect for Spring. It must have been fun preparing for this gathering.

  3. Beautiful table and food. Yvonne from Stone Gable blog lives about 10 minutes from me.

That book sounds really good. We had our book group this week, but we meet at a local diner, that is in a more central location to all the ladies of our church, as many drive quite a distance to come to church.

  4. Just lovely. I like the spring greens and the cute striped bags. Were there goodies in them for each guest?

  7. Deep thoughts for such a joyous table, though it always gets down to the suffering eventually. Pain is a problem. This sounds like a book for me. I see that yours is well underlined (or someone's).

  8. Not what I would have thought for a book club reading, but why not? A good subject to discuss and share thoughts on.

  9. those photos came out so lovely.... thank you. Will link tomorrow to this post. It was a beautiful setting. We are blessed. AND the book to the setting was irony.
Walking with God through Pain and Suffering! The food and room and friends gave each great nourishment to the heart and soul.

  10. A beautiful setting in which to discuss deep matters of the heart and mind. That sounds like a book I'd like to read. I've read Keller's Prodigal God.

  11. A lovely table, set with such scrumptious fare; an accompaniment to the main course, namely, conversation and reflection on the subject at hand.

  12. I have this book in my stack of 'to be read' books. I'm glad to see you gave it a good review. I finished Joni Eareckson Tada's book called, A Place of Healing which shared her journey through understanding why we suffer. It was also very good.

  13. Looks like a lovely gathering. I like reads that are clear and to the point. And if you want to read it again, then it must have meant something to you and that is always good. A second read sometimes brings even more enlightenment. Have a wonderful week. Tammy

  15. This looks like a wonderful setting for discussing a very relevant book, Dotsie. Pain and suffering is a subject we could all use some reflection upon. It's so difficult when we're going through it, but none of us can get through this life without experiencing it.

Thank you for sharing; I hope you have a great week. :)

    Hugs,

    Denise

Could not resist commenting on your table. Like the others, I must know what is contained in the mysterious green and white bags! I am also wondering what the little baked items are on the left. Little quiches? They looked interesting. How about a recipe? The difficult subject (suffering) is softened by the lovely table. Thanks for sharing.

Oh, my. . .lovely photos of your "book club" get together.
The intense expression on the face of your friend is intriquing. This book must have touched you all in a deep and stimulating way.
I LOVE seeing words in print on a real paperbound book!!!
