My sister wrote this at the end of a chatty email the other day.
I decided to make her my guest blogger today! She wrote:
"I meant to write you a 'blog thought' which if I was a blogger I would write
about. It has to do with the back-to-school time of year, and in particular
school supplies for sale at a big box store. It always brings a surge of feelings,
and quite a mix of them, actually. The sight of them all lined up and
sparkling new brings back the excitement/anticipation/anxiety of starting a
new school year as a kid, and it reminds me of my kids' schooling,
our years of homeschooling, etc.
"Also I flat out love office/school supplies, and remember the fresh feeling
of a new notebook, new pencils, new folders at the beginning of a new year.
I am drawn in to look at the school supply aisles. And of course that reminds
me of getting a couple--not many, of course--new outfits, and perhaps
making some new clothes in the extra bedroom upstairs where we
had the sewing machine. [And going to
buy our one new pair of sturdy shoes for the new year of school.]
Maybe your sister should become a blogger? She expressed her thoughts so well. I can relate to the rush of memories, distant and near, that comes along with seeing the display of new school supplies. I can't relate yet to the wistful relief, although I imagine that it will come. (I can also imagine myself buying school supplies for my grandchildren, as my own mother still does for her grands and great-grands!) :)
ReplyDeleteI love school/office supplies too! Around our house they get used up quickly if not for school then for "projects". Once I came home to find that the kids had used up a whole roll of scotch tape taping their mouths and faces. Just putting tape all over their faces. Crazy kids.

'Thank you' to your sister!
ReplyDeleteI drove past the big box office supply store during the first week of school and was so very glad not to have to go inside! I breathed that same sigh of relief.
Sisters don't you love them ! Mine lives in Oxford and I miss her being around.
ReplyDeleteI laid out new supplies on my desk yesterday to get me started on a new project. Very exciting.

A guest blogger! Great! I love the smell of a crayon box- that's what takes me back.
ReplyDeleteI can totally relate to your sister's feelings! In fact, one new dress flashed through my mind--yes, dress. No pants unless the weather was freezing and they had to be removed in the cloak room. Do schools even have cloak rooms anymore? Of course not! I treasured my new supplies in my bookbag (no back packs). Thanks to both of you for today's post.
ReplyDeleteBest,
Bonnie
Me, too!! =D Exactly. blessings ~ tanna
ReplyDeleteSweet thoughts and many that are familiar. I think your sister should have a blog too :)
ReplyDeleteI always loved getting new suppies for each school year as a child and carried out a ritual for our two daughters. Now I get to hear what the grands are bought, and the excitement is still there. I guess some memories are just too comfy to let go.

Your sister said it so well. At our age, and especially for me, I'm so glad school is not of my concern anymore. I would get very anxious at the end of August once I got to high school so I'm glad those days are done! Good post!
ReplyDeleteShe nailed it! I knew it reading the final line...the wistful relief of not needing to be concerned anymore. That's just where I am after all these years of wishing to return. Tell her to fire up a blog. She's a natural!
ReplyDeleteAs a teacher without a classroom (on call) I miss those early days of school. The fresh look of students ready to learn (or not), the way the girl in the front row organized everything 'just so,' and the start of something new.
ReplyDeleteLovely post.
Cute idea to use your sister's note as a post. I have been trying to get my sister to start a blog and I am thinking your sister should do so as well :)
ReplyDeleteI can remember shopping for all those brand new supplies and the smell of brand new crayons. Great memories for those of us that loved school :)
I still cruise the school supplies aisles! That fresh new paper, the new pens and pencils...all that potential! And the new plaid dress with new saddle shoes. All dressed up for the first day of school. I still get those feelings of excitement at the beginning of autumn, maybe from being part of an academic community for so many years. This is my favorite time of year, and maybe all of these feelings and memories are tied up with that. Enjoyed your "guest blogger!"
ReplyDeletegreat words from your sister... and I love the girl on the bench with the cat. Where is that? Gorgeous headliner.
ReplyDeleteThat was really sweet, and I know how she feels. I love new pens and notebooks, I always want them when I see them...don't ask me why!
