The amazing live oaks! They make a lovely road canopy or wonderful shade along a river bank.
Such we experienced on a visit to a Charleston plantation this past weekend.
We hadn't been to Magnolia before and I do think it's my favorite for sure.
There is nature galore to see there, and on a tram ride through the swamps
I met more alligators than I'd like, but at least from a distance. I was amused
at the "ski ramps" they provide for these big lizards to regulate their body temperatures.
Of course the big house did not disappoint.
A house that has been in the same family for 13 generations.
I so enjoyed sitting on the huge, beautiful
porch and then touring every fully furnished room in the house.
We even saw the 1930s "new" bathroom.
Can you imagine coming down stairs off the back porch and walking this path to the river
to welcome relatives and friends coming by boat from Charleston, or down from the north?
As an aside, I've been looking for a wide brimmed straw hat as I need to get
serious about skin protection. We found one at the old market. This is a stretch for me
as I'm not a hat wearer. But as we walked around, I was so thankful to have it.
AND, I was amused to see so many women in similar hats--men too.
I was right in fashion. (I'm usually the last to know what the latest thing is!)
A gift of a day.
The alligators would bother me, too! I'll take my bear any day to an alligator at my door!
ReplyDeleteMagnolia looks like a wonderful place to tour. I'm sure those alligators don't just stay in the water! Yikes! I'm glad you found a hat that suits you. Although I prefer not wearing one, I do for the sake of my skin like you said. ♥
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely home and that porch is fantastic. Glad you found the right hat to protect yourself with!
ReplyDeleteI cannot take alligators or many reptiles at all. Even the turtles in our lake...many are snappers and they can really hurt you.
ReplyDeleteI love Charleston and your hat is perfect. So much more chic than a baseball cap or visor!
What a gorgeous home! I loved visiting the old plantations in Louisiana. Imagine the stories they could tell; granted, not all good. It's lovely to know, though, that a house has stayed in the same family for such a long time. Hats are definitely not my thing. Sounds like you fit right in, though. Have a great new week.
ReplyDeleteThirteen generations! Wow! That has to be a rarity in itself, not to mention how beautifully well it appears to have been maintained!! You know I would have LOVED to have tagged along on this one! Great hat! The boys would have loved all the "giant lizards"! Ha!! blessings ~ tanna
ReplyDeleteMagnolia is my favorite of the Charleston plantations. Thank you for a trip down memory lane this morning.
ReplyDeleteBest,
Bonnie
What a stunning place to visit, just my cup of tea. Your first beautiful mosaic reminds me so much of the wonderful scenery of Hilton Head Island, a place firmly lodged in my heart. After seeing your photos I want to be there now!
ReplyDeleteHappy Mosaic Monday, have a great week.
I am glad that you had a beautiful day to enjoy it. I am very impressed with any family who owns a home for thirteen generations! Wow!
ReplyDeleteWow...what a great place to visit! And that house...I can only imagine visiting all of the rooms. Like you, I am not a hat person but I think you look adorable in it, even if you gave us only a little gander of your photo :) Looks and sounds like a fun weekend!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a grand day. I'll have to remember to put Magnolia on the list when (if) I get to Charleston. Thirteen generations -- amazing! Happy Monday!
ReplyDeleteDotsie, That was a lovely visit with you to Charleston. What a lovely house. Interesting way to regulate their temperature. I think in the river is too close for alligators but I live up north where no such creatures live. It's what you get used to. Good for you wearing a hat and I'm glad you found one that suits you. Thanks for sharing and have a great week. Sylvia D.
ReplyDeleteCharleston is one of the most beautiful cities to visit...and photograph! And oh my...alligators and more! I zoomed to to see that gator but he looks different that the ones we see here, more color variations! We see them at a distance so it's never bothered me. Love the beautiful live oak trees and the Spanish moss! Makes me want to go! And I love your new hat...very stylish! Hugs!
ReplyDeleteCharleston is such a lovely city. I had the same thought as you did, Dotsie, about going down to the river from the plantation house (we visited Middleton) and greeting visitors at the river. Wonderful photos. I'd be wary of the alligators, too.
ReplyDeleteAhhh . . . warm but not humid sounds like the best of all days, certainly perfect weather for visiting a grand house and for meandering beautiful garden paths. Alligators? Well, as long as they keep their distance . . .
ReplyDeleteGlad that you found your trendy hat! :)
I agree with Cheryl about the weather!
ReplyDeleteI love old houses, and ones in the south are amazing. I'd love to visit Charleston one day!
I'm not so keen on the alligators! But the hat is very chic.
ReplyDeleteNice to see how the other half has lived for generations in such an opulent plantation home. I have to wear a hat which isn't so bad until I go to take it off, then it's not pretty with my hair squashed down. lol It's a shame we didn't have the knowledge that abounds today about wearing sunscreen and how severe sunburns as a child can affect us in later life.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to visit Charleston some day and see the magnificence of this area.
It sounds wonderful! I like alligators. They taste like chicken. 😃 Like your hat. I always wear a visor when out for my walk.
