We relished some time away on a Virginia farm this month, and while there,
a visit to the D-Day memorial in Bedford, the American community that lost more men per capita
in the Normandy landings than any other.
We've enjoyed time at home loving the coolish weather, rainy days,
and spring flowers, especially our knock-out roses.
The end of May signals the end of the school year, and Not-so-Little One, her
friend and I enjoyed our fourth annual end of year
celebration milkshake at the counter of a local diner.
This year I volunteered in her 2nd grade classroom each week helping with
learning centers. It was sad to say good-bye to a wonderful class.
I loved being with them and it became my favorite day of the week.
Will you follow the class to third grade? Such a fun thing for you to have done meaningful for both you and your granddaughter and friends. (Bet the teacher appreciated you, too!)
ReplyDeleteHow lucky you are to participate in the formal education of your granddaughter. I like the final day celebration with a milkshake. Our younger grands have three more weeks before their school ends for the year.
ReplyDeleteVirginia is beautiful, my husband and I enjoyed our long trip from D.C., through Virginia and on to Asheville one year. The memorials were especially touching to visit.
ReplyDeleteI know you will miss your girls. I did quite a bit of volunteering when my kids were in elementary school. When my last moved on to high school I decided to call it a day. I was sad but there were many new young mothers who wanted to spend time with their own children and their classmates. And I have to say, those uniforms in your pics look familiar!
Enjoy your Memorial Day holiday, Dot.

End of term traditions and bittersweet memories as you say goodbye to your class but, as you say, here comes June!
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining us for MM again this week.
Your time volunteering at your granddaughter's school must surely have been rewarding. How sweet to end the year with such delicious delights!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful week,
Poppy
What a special thing to do in your granddaughter's class! Could you follow them up to third grade? Is it a private school? Will they stay together into third grade or get moved into other classes? My brain is busy trying to figure it out for you! ha ha!
ReplyDeleteYour get away sounds really good.
I love Virginia and your time away sounds awesome. We actually stayed in Bedford several years ago while on a trip to Peaks of Otter. Have you ever been there? Beautiful part of the country!
ReplyDeleteI love these glimpses of your May days! Some cooler days before the summer heat are so welcome and enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteYou are building such memories with your granddaughter. Precious times! (Great photo of the girls on the counter stools! It says so much . . .)
What a joy to spend time helping the children in your granddaughter's grade 2 class each week. I love the photo of the girls at the soda fountain counter. One doesn't see them too often these days. I posted today about taking a long blog break for the summer and maybe longer.....we'll see. I have enjoyed following you and getting to know you over the years Dotsie, and will try to stay in touch with a visit now and then. I'll also see you on IG. You can read my post today about it. I wish you a beautiful summer. Blessings and hugs. Pam
ReplyDeleteI bet you did enjoy your granddaughter's class. Time sure flies ... school is over and the summer (heat and humidity included) is here. the idea of a milkshake at the counter of a diner sounds so good to me! Sweet memories you are building.
ReplyDeleteHow nice to be able to volunteer in your granddaughter's class. Sweet. How sobering it would be to visit Bedford on Memorial weekend. :(
ReplyDeleteDotsie, It was nice to read your posts on time in the classroom connecting with the younger generation. Thanks for sharing and have a great week. Sylvia D.
ReplyDeleteYour roses are gorgeous! I'm enjoying mine and have 3 bud vases filled right now. I love that you volunteered with the little ones. Sounds like something i would enjoy doing. Enjoy your week! Summer vacation! ;) Hugs!
ReplyDeleteHard to believe that we'll be into June this week. I only did the odd volunteer job at school with our grands and I found it rewarding so can imagine how you feel.
ReplyDeleteWe visited the memorial at Bedford many times during our trips to Roanoke. Never failed to give me goosebumps... and a tear or two.
ReplyDeleteI know you will miss that sweet little class... and they will miss you. Who knows what next year has in store?? ;) blessings and hugs ~ tanna
As a retired teacher, I can't thank you enough for volunteering in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteHappy June! And vacation days should give you more time for celebratory milkshakes with that special young lady. Yay! (I don't have that excuse but I still enjoy a milkshake once in a while!)
