to floss or not to floss

Just shy of 46 years old, the Gardener's wedding band got stuck on his swollen finger. It had been there all those years except for the recent surgery. G's finger swelled in the night due to a bug bite on his knuckle. There was no way we could get that ring off.

We tried a few things and of course nothing worked. Then I recalled a you tube video I had seen––I can't remember why or when––but it was fascinating to see a method using dental floss to remove a ring from a swollen finger.

I maneuvered the floss under his ring with a plastic needle and then started winding the floss ever so tightly around his finger (which we had soaked briefly in ice water.) This may be the hardest medical thing I've had to do for him as it was so terribly painful. A little dish soap aided, and bit by bit, pulling the floss from the top the ring advanced further and further down his finger until off it came!!

I don't recommend anyone use this method. I just share the story for the amazement of how something we see or hear about in passing can years later become something vital to us. I attribute it to God's loving providence and care. The finger is healing nicely and the ring will go back on soon!
A recently discovered photo when the ring was only 16 years old.

  1. Glad you were able to get his ring off!

That photo is great! Amazing how the years go by fast, isn't it?

  2. Ouch...rings need to be removed for many reasons. We had a similar experience when my hubby was scheduled for a procedure that required anesthesia. We worked and worked to get that ring off of his finger. With a lot of twisting and turning and copious amounts of lotion it came off. But not without pain.
Such a sweet photo of you and your sweetheart. It's so nice to discover those photos from yesterday. ♥

  3. I'm so glad that nothing had to be removed. Yikes! Those fingers can swell so fast. You're a good one to know... Cute picture...Cute couple! Your husband sure is a tall drink of water. He must come in handy for those tall cupboards. 🙂

Next time, use Windex. Spray it on the finger and the ring will slide right off.

  6. Loving providence for sure. And, a smart nurse. ;) We used that trick in ortho a lot. Hope the Gardener's finger is back to normal SOON and that precious band of gold is back in its place. Love and blessings to you two ~ tanna

  7. Both Steve and I had to have our wedding bands cut off of our fingers - his at 4 years of marriage and mine on our 32nd anniversary. He no longer wears a ring and I have a simple band. I wish we had know this trick!

  8. Ouch! Glad the method worked. I had a ring stuck once and boy oh boy did it hurt trying to get it off. My husband bought us matching gold bands when we got married. He didn't wear it for long and now neither one of us can even get them on. Always fun finding old photos. My how times flies. Have a good weekend.

  9. Oh wow...that surely must have been painful but I'm so glad you were able to remove it! I don't think I've ever heard of that trick before but will try to remember it if I ever need to...which I hope I don't! Thanks for sharing and enjoy the rest of your weekend :)

  10. I'm guessing this only work on swollen fingers and not enlarged knuckles!

  14. I've seen that method on FB too and wondered about it. Thanks for the heads up that it is painful! lol My husband's iron ring - an engineer's ring - was stuck on his baby finger many years ago. It was too small and nothing would make it budge so he took an electric grinder to it and cut it off.....very carefully. Mind you the ring got a little hot and burned the skin under it a bit but the ring was removed and a new one was ordered! I wouldn't recommend this method either. LOL I like the photo of you and your hubby. Have a good week!

  16. It's a good thing the floss method came back to you - and that it worked! I've known a couple of people who had to have their wedding band cut off.

  17. Oh, I love the photo of you two young things! So sweet!

I am glad that the ring story had a happy ending. That does sound painful and I can only imagine how difficult it was for you to do.

  19. Believe it or not, Dotsie, my mom was just telling me about this same method of ring removal a few weeks ago. We were comparing the size of our rings, and how much tighter they are on our fingers now than when we first got them. I haven't been able to get my wedding ring off in a long time, and some of my mom's fingers are swollen from arthritis. She actually used this method (did it all by herself) to remove her rings before she had knee replacement surgery some years ago. She was worried she was going to have to get the rings cut off, so the dental floss method was a last resort. She said it did work, but it was incredibly painful. I hope I don't have to do this with my wedding band.

I hope the Gardener is doing well, now, Dotsie; thanks for sharing this with us.

    Hugs,

    Denise
