swiveling the globe

It was the little metal circle at the top of our globe that
fascinated me as a child. I'd set the time for our
country, hold it tight with my little finger while I swiveled the globe
to another country and noted the time it was there.
My father would suggest I do the math and see what the time difference was.
I've always been fascinated by globes and maps.
Studying them takes me to places far away.
A map of the world hung on the wall by our kitchen table with pictures
pasted on it of global workers our family prayed for at dinner time.
I've been privileged to travel to many countries throughout my life.
I'm usually reluctant to leave on a journey, enjoy it
immensely while there, but am ever so happy to get home.
There is no place quite as good as home in my opinion.

  2. I have always loved maps. The Great Dane's first Christmas gift to me was a book of old maps. When we travel, if I can find an old map THAT will be my souvenir. I majored in Geography as an undergraduate - never did much with it but certainly enjoyed it. Google, Sat Navs and GPS will never make me as happy as a map on my lap.

  4. I've always loved globes and maps. I play a game on my IPAD that features cities around the world. It's such fun to travel that way! lol Hugs, Diane

  5. Maps are great, so are globes. I love learning about different places, and I enjoy traveling, though I've not done a great deal of it.

  6. I am just like you! Fascinated with maps! I too, am reluctant to go, happy as a clam to be there, and always, so, so happy to be home! I spent three weeks in Italy with my Mom a few years back. We had a fabulous time, but I got so very homesick!!

  7. Maps and globes are wonderful and make great decor. It's always fun to follow along with someone's itinerary as I have with my traveling family members. I despise travel. If I could just "be there" I'd like it a lot. It's the having to put in the miles that gets to me. For that reason, I truly am a homebody.

  8. Maps are wonderful things, and in recent years, I've learned that nautical charts are equally fascinating. Your globe photos are great.
I enjoy anticipating the trip until a few days before I leave, then I wonder why on earth I'd planned to go, and do end up enjoying myself immensely. But coming home just can't be beat!

  9. I have always loved maps and globes, and was also curious to see what time it was in another part of the world. It was fun to put an ant on the globe and watch to see which countries he visited. And I too agree that is nice to return home. Beautiful photos of maps and globes. They always catch my eye.

  10. Hello, lovely story about you and your dad. I would like to swing the globe and pick a spot to travel to. Some place with hot weather! Happy Monday, enjoy your new week!

  12. Wonderful photos of your globe! I like especially the first one because of its warm colour and nostalgic glow.
Blogging has made the time zones more real to me: When I'm writing this, it's 3 pm here, while you have just enjoyed your morning coffee. :)
    Have a lovely week ahead!

  13. Although we didn't have a globe at home, the one on a stand at school fascinated me. I think it was the beginning of dreams of far off places and although I haven't travelled anywhere near as much as you Dotsie, blogging has given armchair travelling a new meaning.

  14. We also enjoy maps and globes and I bought my husband a globe not too long ago as a Christmas present. Now I notice everyone who sits beside it gives it a twirl and has a look at it. Now I'm on the lookout for a brass magnifying glass to go with it. I too am reluctant to leave my own comfy home to go on a trip, but once I arrive at my destination I want to keep on travelling!

  15. My father loved maps too and we had some really neat antique ones on our walls. They now reside in museums since his passing.

I think it's neat, I really do that you and your father had that together.

I agree, there is no place like home.

Your fire and heart garland looks so comfy and welcoming.

Have a blessed and wonderful week. Hugs.

  17. Globes can be enchanting, can't they. They cause us to dream, reflect, wish! I loved my globe as a child, too. I got mine for Christmas in 4th grade (long with a microscope). According to my folks I'd outgrown dolls. Have a wonderful week!

  20. Well, I've only been out of the country once...but as much as I enjoy going anywhere, even to see my TN bunch, I am always glad to get home. Planning and the anticipation alone of going anywhere seems to the most exciting part sometimes...not always...but regardless, home is always the best place :)

  21. I do love to travel, Dotsie. I always want to see what's around the next bend, but there truly is no place like home! ♥

  22. As I've known you for quite awhile, I've always admired your travels and for such good causes. Bravo.

My mother worked in a factory that made globes. She brought many home...those that weren't perfect and couldn't be shipped out. We had so many globes...of the earth and moon and you name it. It was quite educational and they definitely took up a lot of space!!! Such memories!

  23. No wonder you love maps and globes! Your family made them come alive with real people and places and connections!

I am afraid that I am not nearly as adventurous as you, Dotsie. I am such a homebody. But I do enjoy travel vicariously! My son, in fact, recently went to Israel and I have so enjoyed hearing about his travels. I am the person who will happily watch the slide show of your vacation photos. :)

  24. I love maps and globes as well and gave the globes away to each daughter a while back to have for the grands. The one that I did keep, well, it got majorly damaged quite by accident and it hit the garbage pail. I need to find a new one that I can treasure as much now. Have a great week~

  25. Dotsie, What a wonderful post. I love paper maps. They make order of my world and my preferred method of figuring out where I'm going. Sylvia D.

  26. We always had a map of Canada on the wall above our kitchen table too. And I think there was a world map underneath it. Our lessons were done at that table until high school when we went to our bedrooms to 'study' (with the transistor radio playing the latest hit parade songs). :) I don't think I ever knew what that metal curved thing with the markings on it was for. How our world has changed in the past 50-60 years! Our maps from our childhood would be very outdated today.

  27. I totally agree, Podso! As much as I enjoy the experiences of exploring new places, I always look forward to coming home and return from my travels with a new appreciation of my home.

  28. I agree. There's no place like home, but sometimes we have to leave it for awhile to realize that!

  29. Podso,
This post took me back in time to the days of Elementary School and Map drills!
I, too, enjoy old subtle hued maps!
    Fondly,
    Pat
