chapel by the sea

Alongside "Old Baldy"--the longest standing lighthouse in North Carolina--
sits this ever-so-charming chapel. We saw it first as daylight faded.

Actually it's along Bald Head Creek, but ever so close to the ocean as well.
The Gardener and I were so taken by it that we went over the next morning,
and sure enough we could go inside to have a look around.
It is as beautiful inside as it is outside.

Visits from different siblings bookended a week at the beach
with our son's family, so it's been a busy time lately.
Bald Head Island has a different feel to it than most beaches I've experienced.
Having to take the ferry over made us think twice about what we took with us.
It's a quiet place with lots of shade and old trees and no motorized
vehicles--just the hum of golf carts which are so fun to drive.
But--don't forget to plug them in for a recharge!

  1. That sounds like such a pleasant place...anytime we can make it away from the bustle of our 21st Century lives to something far more quiet is a tonic. Did you hate to leave? The chapel is very special. You might have enjoyed a Sunday service there if you had known about it.

  2. Bald Head island is such a unique spot. We spent an afternoon there years ago and vowed to return for a longer visit. I imagine staying for a week was a wonderful refreshing time. ♥

  4. I'm so glad you were able to fill your tank with God's awesome creation and family time and the beauty of man's designs before you have to set time aside for surgery and recovery. The chapel is so charming and I am also taken with the lovely brick patio/walkway, the inviting benches, and pretty plantings.

  5. Oh that chapel is gorgeous - your trip sounds so wonderful! It's been so long since I've truly "gotten away." It seems with all our projects there just isn't any time, energy or money left to travel. I love blogging - it so often feels I got out of town when I am lucky enough to read posts like this one - just takes me away!

Sorry I have been so MIA - trying to catch up - not easy - big hugs.

  6. The chapel is beautiful- and I am imagining a place with no cars. That sounds even better...slows everyone down I bet, at least long enough to smell the roses.
    Have a wonderful hump day!

  14. Such a beautiful chapel. So peaceful. Hope you are well, dear Dotsie. I'm only checking in for a quick stop in blog land. Life feels short lately and I'm in a carpe diem frenzy of sorts. I think it is my friend's husband having bone cancer that there is no chemo that is working and Evan's back issues and surgery this spring. All together it seems the clock is ticking way too fast. I think of you often in my frenzy. love and hugs ~ tanna

  15. This is such a lovely peaceful chapel. A week in a quiet place with no cars sounds just about perfect to me. We had two weeks in northeastern Nevada and parts of Idaho and Utah. Very beautiful places, but this was a trip to enjoy our six young grandchildren out there, so quiet and tranquility were not really in the plans. We've just booked a 3-day October getaway at our favorite lake cabin in the far north woods of New Hampshire. Now that promises to be quiet and peaceful!
